Buying a new helmet, do you check the date of manufacturing?

Need a new helmet and some sales going on but it's getting late in season so I should wait till spring? How close is the date of manufacturing to the date that you bought your new helmet? Six months?

For me it depends on price. If I am paying full price, I expect <six months old. If you want to sell me a helmet four years old and new in box, I'm not interested unless price is <20% of msrp. I don't care that it's new, it's most of the way to aging out. In practice, that means I very rarely buy aged helmets as most sellers hold out for someone that either doesn't know about age or is willing to accept an old helmet for a small discount.

If a helmet is on sale it's at least 1 year old, and possibly much more. I don't worry too much about the age on street helmets. I have to pay more attention to it on track helmets since track orgs have helmet age requirements, although very few of them check. I've been wearing the same brand & model of helmet for over a decade now so I don't mind buying them online since I know they'll fit, but you have no idea what manufacture date you'll get that way. So I try to keep track of what new colorways are added each year for that model in order to get a "fresh" one if I'm buying online.
