Brake rotor/pad sweep question.

I was at Red Dawn's TMP track day today and the guy pitted beside me had Braketech Iron rotors and the identical brake pads (Ferodo CP1) just like mine (except his are on his R6 and mine are on my R1).

His R6, check out the full area of the pad contact:

Now my R1:

On close inspection it appears the pads overhang the outside of the rotor. Is this normal? Got the rotors and Ferodo CP1 pads from Bluestreak and they both were installed by John Sharrard.

Let me know what you think.

And if you did, are they the same part for the R6 and R1? You could be comparing apples to oranges.

Aside from that, the sweep on his bike is VERY close to the carrier, I think I'd be more comfortable with your setup.

I just called Tony and said "gimme rotors for 07 r1" got them a few days later. I just sent him an e-mail to confirm what I got.

I'll check the part numbers and see.

Just wasn't sure pads were ever supposed to overhang the edge of the rotor. I sent the pics to braketech too, I'm sure they'll have the answer :)

Maybe it's just how I'm looking at it but I think I see a bit of unworn area at the outter edge, so is the pad over hanging the rotor?

I see the unused outer edge too. Looks to me like the pads are smaller than the rotor surface. You said the same pads as the R6, but they aren't the same calipers, are they? The pads won't be the same part number. Maybe yours are narrower.

I have Braketech Axis rotors on my 10R and I'm using the ZX14 calipers with a 10mm Brembo spacer kit. I have about 2mm of rotor outside the brake pad.

If any part of the brake pad is off the rotor there is something wrong.

That's the chamfer on the edge of the rotor. As his new pads wear down that will get used too.

+1 that is just the chamfer put on by the manufacturer, and something does not seem to be right....Either the rotors are too small, or you have the wrong caliper offset or spacers.

Simply measure the diameter of your rotors, and compare that to the size your bike is supposed to come with....You did not list a year for your R1 so I cant say what they are supposed to be....

On my bike I have ran anywhere from 280-320mm rotors, all easily adaptable with the correct size caliper spacers. If I use the wrong spacer on the wrong size rotor I end up with what you have there

There is also a chance that everything is right with the calipers and rotors, but the pads could be wrong...

This is correct. The dark edge you see on the outside of the rotors is the chamfered part, that's why it's black/looks unused.

The braketech rotors didn't come with any caliper spacers so I assume there shouldn't be any caliper spacers installed. Here's a pic, I don't really know what I'm looking for:

07 R1. I tried my best to measure the diameter of the rotor but it's next to impossible to do with a tape measure when installed, if you have some trick I can use to measure the rotor when installed plz let me know :(

When I see rotors listed on ebay for my 07 R1 they say 310mm, and the 310mm rotors fit the following bikes:

YZF R6 (05-14)
YZF R1 (07-14)

When looking at the braketech application guide: http://braketech.com/images/docs/bt-yam.webapps.6-13.pdf

The smallest rotors they list for R6 and R1 is 310mm, so I doubt it's likely I got undersized rotors?? I see they do offer "oversize" R1 rotors in 320mm and 330mm.
 
Check your invoices to make sure you have the correct part numbers. After that if you still can't find a problem take it to someone who knows what they're doing to figure out where the mix up is.

I looked, can't find my invoice for the rotors. Think there's a part number stamped on em somewhere?

Tony at Bluestreak seemed to think it shouldn't be a problem, as long as I don't let my pads get real low and they touch... he said that would be VERY bad.
 
The calipers/pads don't look like they're coming low enough on the rotor. Take your wheel off and measure your rotor. This isn't somthing to be lazy about.
 
If you don't want to remove the wheel. Measure the circumferance with a pee wee tape. Or wrap a piece of string around the circ. Of the rotor than measure that lenght and divide by pie. 3.14 that's the diameter.
