Best bikes to invest in?

DOHC1,

It seems like more trouble then its worth but if you want to go for it, you could probably make a little bit of money buying off desperate sellers and then seller to spring buyers.

In essence though, buying a depreciating asset is generally a bad idea if you are talking about 'investing' but if you can haggle really well then it could work as for whatever reason a lot of people selling used motorcycles don't really fully buy into the idea of depreciating assets as so many bikes are priced insanely.

Your idea of 3 CBR125's is probably the best way to go as Im sure there are a lot of eager sellers wanting to ditch the bike. I looked on kijiji and wow, there are some pretty fairly priced ones.

EDIT: oh wait, I just looked on Honda's website and they are still clearing out brand new 09's for $2300 with the new ones priced at $3100. Thats likely going to make it more difficult to offload a used one at $1800 dont you think?

if you have the storage space, why not just rent it out to people for winter storage? thats an easy couple hundred without too much hassel

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm going to do some more research, and am going to get a bike that's a fixer-upper. The idea of buying 3 cheap bikes was my way of covering my back incase one of them turned out to be a lemon/major problems. I'll definitely let you guys know if i go through with it, if anything, its a learning experience.

Dude just get a job.

I work two jobs. Also am doing full-time university. Every little bit helps...I'm going to be graduating with zero student loans, because I'm always looking for opportunities to make a profit. Ive usually done cars, but since I took my RTI course..bikes are all I can think of :D

Some people dont realize that modifications do NOT increase the value of the bike

I look right past them. A mod here or there maybe. Of course most change their exhaust. Personally I think getting the original parts with the bike is the deal breaker, but no one seems to hold onto the original parts after they take them off.

You sound like me last year. Working 3 jobs when I wrote my final exams at Rye. The difference is I had already been riding since I was a teenager and already owned 6 different bikes. You sound like you're one weekend at RTI short of having absolutely no experience with bikes, which makes you a sucker in the eyes of people selling their bikes...

My advice: keep your liquidity, you'll find better things to invest in. Like moving out.

Many have tried and failed to make money doing something like this... Ignore the fact that you have to pay taxes (unless you are some how exempt) which will most likely eat away at any future profits... The reality is that next spring the bikes will be considered 1 year older.. (ie, a 2008 is 3 years old now, 4 years old next year) and therefore in the minds of most buyers worth less. People often get the same idea this time of year about convertibles and other collectors items and rarely do they make money.

Good luck if you go down this road, let us know how it works for you.

nah just buy any ss sport bike for 4-5 grand its actually worth, then comes summer and post it up for 7500 - 8500 like everyone else in toronto

Usually those are the ones left without a buyer come the end of the season.

They'll have to drop their prices eventually to reflect the real market value or else be stuck with it forever.

.....

I'll be damn straight with you, you are better off investing that 4000 into some random stocks when the next economic crisis happens (2012, or when Bill Gates has cancer, or something).

Personally don't think it's worth it but maybe you've done better research than me.

Some used dealers I know buy repossessed bikes from the US and sell them here. That's the only way it's worth their time and money to do this. They sell at very attractive prices undercutting local competition and so they always have turnover. You'll be selling your bikes among all the others come Springtime at about the same price.
