Backpack increase risk of back injuries?

I remember reading on this site that someone's friend ended up with a spinal injury because of a backpack. They had a can of pop in there and landed right on it. If you're putting the pack over a jacket that has back armour installed, then I don't see it as a problem. Backpack over wife beater, more than 1 problem.

Many opinions here. Mine is that I don't ride with a back pack and many of the opinions here are the reason why;

-It MAY protect you (even though it wasn't designed to. Even the bike specific packs aren't safety gear, they're just more comfortable on a bike or better at protecting your stuff)

-It MAY harm you

I think based on that none of them are designed to protect me, that I'd rather strap my stuff to the machine and simply wear gear designed to protect me. And yes, I'm an ATGATT guy.

Something I never thought about to be honest. I wear a backpack on 80% of my rides, mainly because I commute often. Over the last two weeks ago I can think of some pretty silly things I've had in there:

- glass bottle of baileys
- 500 loose poker chips
- 8 tall cans of beer

I belly flopped off my bike once when I hit a curb and the flipped onto my back. Backpack was destroyed but didn't cause any additional injuries.

Now when I've got the huge 75L hiking pack loaded with 48 beer bottles, that might go differently.

Ogio Mach 5 here as well. Great backpack for commuting. It's got a chest strap and a waist strap so that the bag can be tightened and it won't shift and move any weight inside during turns and it can hold a surprisingly large maount of stuff when it's expanded. Not sure about the safety of it, but it's not uncomfortable especially if you wear leather anyway. The only downside is that it definitely makes it hotter and you get back sweat on hot days.
