Backfire on startup

My 2006 Kawasaki 650R backfires on start-up from time to time. Only happened a couple of time so far (bought bike a few weeks ago), but I'm wondering if this is normal, what causes it and is there a way of stopping it?

I thought if might be the 87 octane gas, even though that is the gas that's recommended for the bike, so I've filled up with 89 octane gas for the last couple of fill-ups. I haven't noticed it since, but this could just be coincidental.

Anyone else get backfiring at start up from time to time?

did you wash th bike before you fired it up? could be water in the exhaust

its funny - i have a 650r - and i could swear sometimes when i am actually riding and then when rolling off the throttle, i hear it back fire. But i could be mistaken and just simpy crazy. It could just be the engine noise. Its a very low muffled back firing noise if any.
I've heard some serious back firing in my time, and it doesnt sound like that - but its a little disconcerning.
I use 89

650R has a really short exhaust system, decel pops are quite common.
