Lol, yeah, I frequently get the "are you nuts?" talk from my friends... my buddy's mom last night was practically yelling at me when I was gearing up to leave.

Scary as it can be (and yes it is indeed my only vehicle), every day I arrive home alive I appreciate the risks involved, and it just makes me love riding that much more.
is your buddy's mom a hot milf, think you could do her? show her your nuts.

No wonder you were behind me for most of the ride home! haha

Did not have any problems with the wind riding the Burgman 650, only problem was visibility with the fog and such. Holding 110-120 the entire way home seemed to help with the little bit of wind problems I did have.
 
Taunton Rd between Pickering and Ajax has some of the craziest crosswinds. I was out there last year I swear I thought the bike was gonna cartwheel! Now anytime I'm in an open area I just keep aware in the back of my head that wind will come out of nowhere and stay ready for it

Do you think the stability was a result of the 'step through' scooter type design of the burgman being less affected by the cross winds?
 
No it's the weight distribution - with fuel, transmission and motor way down low it's CofG is much lower than many other mcycles especially against a VStrom.
One reason it's great in the twisties.
One reviewer after riding a 650 Burgman actually questioned the design of sports bikes as many of those are top heavy as well and the Burgman was so easy to ride fast and securely.

The fairing on the Burgman gives a lot of protection up front - part of wind gusts issue is it hitting you rather than the bike. The bike is heavy - circa nudging 600 lb so all that weight mostly down low lets it absorb energy well.

The worst one I recall was a vortex off the back of a dual trailer rig which just body slammed me out of the blue coming back from PA - there were 4 of us and we all got our teeth rattled. I have waited out near tornado conditions but that was more slef preservation than wind issue - damn it was raining hard and visibility nil. As SB mentioned - visibility is an issue.

Wind is very tiring tho - I try to find a wind shadow of a another vehicle even tho it might increase the turbulence a bit it takes away some of the blunt force.

If I'm thinking of a casual ride and it's high winds I won't go - just don't want to get that tired. Earplugs help in wind keeps you calmer.

Have yet to experience anything massive on the KLR here in Aus - oil can on stilts......will not play well with wind.
 
Hmmmph that reminded me one day was crossing an overpass on over the 403 - the bike was soooo sluggish I turned around to go home to check it.......realized when I started going the other way it was just a very strong, smooth wind - like riding in treacle. Downside of the good protection on the Burgman - it pushes a lot of air.
