Any tips for drilling lead?

I'm trying to drill some smaller diameter holes in a lead keel I cast for a pond yacht model. Even on the lowest speed my drill press spins too fast, melts the lead, bungs up and snap the drill. My handheld drill even with short bursts is enough to melt and bung/break the drill.

Is an old fashioned hand crank drill my only option?

Place your piece and vice into a small washtub filled with cold water, use small Dremel straight router bit instead of a drill bit.

Freezing lead also makes it easier to drill.

Lube? How did I not already try that (damn weed).

A squirt of Lloyds silicone spray and we have a winner - when done gently.

TADA. Thanks all.

The drill bits are place holders until I finish shaping the keel and replace them with brass screws.
