The ability to roll the bike cleanly into a corner is why they are hugely popular and sell in Europe, inner city parking in European cities is a genuine concern. $500 is not unrealistic, your not paying for the metal tubing, your paying for the engineering.

I paid $165 or $170 new. You got ripped off if you got it for $300
How much is a better?
I'd be interested too if the price is right. I could use it cos my garage is small and easier to roll the bike against the wall if I had this. I park both the bike and car in the garage in the winter just a bit of moving the bike around this stand could really help.
