I am thinking of gettin an older 748 1999-2001 because i love how they look.. But i am concerned about the rocker playing flaking off ordeal

Anyone have any feedback on this?

Not much feedback to be given. If you're concerned, there's only one way to tell if the issue affects the particular bike you're looking to buy. You gotta roll up your sleeves and get in there.

I remember seeing that one go up for sale... if there is one knock against it at all, it is simply that it is not red. I would still buy that bike if I was thinking of getting a 748/998 right now. I don't think there would be a smarter purchase to be made within any short distance on that specific model.

If you're going to buy a 748 do not pay these stupid prices for it. Peninsula listed a regular 748 for $9,999. They're idiots. $4-5k max. If you have the cash the 998 is the right choice, it does not have the rocker problem.

If the rockers have been changed already are they good? Or does it re occur?

Ducati replaces them with the exact same parts. They will fail again, and they're NOT cheap.

Word is its best to have them refinished..there was one shop in particular that was popular for it but the name escapes me.

I have a 748 and from the research i've done before making the purchase, not every 748/996/916 had the flaking issue, with the 2000+ models it seems there is almost none. I would suggest buying a Duc that was broken into, something over 30 000kms, mostly because everything that had to be done or fixed is completed. Otherwise just make sure the oil change and maintenance was done on time and not skipped and you've got yourself a bike that is as reliable as any other jap other there.

Well the guy wanted $5500 for the bike it had no service records and he is selling it for a friend and the friend said no work was done . So since no one knows anything concrete i walked away

You can see without the service records if the bike was taken care of or not just by taking a closer look, as soon as you have doubts that's it just leave.

Having a look as in taking the fairings off and getting into the valves? Not sure if anyone would allow that :-)

5-6k tops depending on condition, IMO

Not too many for sale so its hard to judge. Quick scan of trader.ca and all of ebay motors only turns up maybe 6 results.

Scroll through ducati.ms forum classifieds for bikes... there's maybe 1 749 for sale per page, mostly newer than 2003 models ranging from 5500 to 8500 for the S. Personally I'd just set my sights higher on the 999, unless you really can't afford the insurance.

Or go to the states and get this 749S, you probably won't find a better deal in Canada. I wouldn't even bother with a non-S model, these are just way cooler.

(dont let anyone tell you that you can't ride a Ducati 4000km back home ;) lol)

Haha you rode back 4000 km???
Well everyone is mentioning the 999 or the 749s ... What is wrong with the 749? I figured i save money on insurance and since i am not tracking the bike i would get the same use out of the 749.. Not sure if that makes sense?

No that makes no sense actually. 999 has more power. More power is better everywhere especially on street.
