A $50.00 Unrecognizable Plate Charge plus tolls per trip are billed to light vehicles without a valid transponder whose rear license plate’s identifying features are altered, not visible to or recognizable by the toll system.

Anyone deal with this? Some of us have fender eliminators and the plates, sometimes, don't get picked up. This kinda stupid because if they cannot recognize the plate how do they charge you? Based on assumption? If so, isn't that illegal?!

I've gotten this one before. If you have a motorcycle that it has trouble picking up your plate, link your motorcycle plate to your car plate account and everything will be peachy.

The charge is "if the AUTOMATED system can't identify your plate" then $50 charge for a human to figure out what it says and send ya the bill.

It's recursive too, so if you've been getting free trips then one day they figure out your plate they'll tack on all the previous charges :(

My plates clearly visible from the cameras and only get billed occasionally.

The only PITA with the 407 is when they forget to drop the no-transponder fee. I usually have to call once a year to have the charges reversed.

Oh yeah, great to mention, no "no transponder" fee's for bikes, just register your plate as a motorcycle plate (and keep an eye on your bills).

This is ****ing stupid. My old bike had no fender eliminator and the 407 was missing it.

What if we have no car plates to link up with -____-

This just feels horribly wrong. So what if one day they decide to try to figure out those entries/exits you made without charges and then you suddenly see a $4000 bill. If you don't pay it, you can't renew your plate, what the **** is this?

It's best to call the 407 peeps and ask. Once I linked my moto plate to my car plate no more fee's if they missed it, no idea why they care if it's like that.

Yeah I'm gonna ask tomorrow.

EDIT: Ty again btw. You've been a great help multiple times.

np. Let us know what the official current "hard to read bike plates" policy is ;)

I avoid the 407 as much as possible but have been pulled over twice when taking it for:
Evasion, etc., of electronic toll system
191.3 (1) No person shall engage in an activity or use any device or material for the purpose of evading, obstructing or interfering with the effective operation of an electronic toll system. 1996, c. 1, Sched. E, s. 2 (3).

Both times I had another motorcyclist pass me and the officer on the side of the road at a high rate of speed which caused the officer to tell me he was leaving...lol.

Spoke to a representative, she stated that it has to be intentional obstruction (clean car but only license plate is dirty, hand over plate, etc. etc.).

So long story short: if you get caught trying to cheat the system, somehow, expect a $50 charge tacked on. However, she had no idea wtf a fender eliminator is -________-

She SEEMED understanding of motorcycles...but I don't know if this guarantees anything. This system sucks.

So is a fender eliminator "intentional". The plate isn't in the factory location, no doubt harder for the cameras to read? hmmm.

Case by case i suppose.

Some eliminators keep the plate below the tail light and its clearly visible, others move it in farther and it ends up being obstructed.

Ive got one of those installed on my bike and so far no problems. Even had a OPP trail me and another guy who had the exact same plate location on the 407 for a couple km, but once he realized we're not doing anything crazy he went away.

Mine is very similar with a small LED for night

The 407 cameras have a very hard time hitting this and I really don't wanna end up with a 500 $ charge. This "policy" change is kinda ********.

Mind you, the cameras were missing on my GS500F before where the plate was in a standard position.

Whenever I use the 407 on the bike I find it hit and miss with their cameras. My plate is located in the factory location clearly visible. Sometimes I notice they know where I got off and not on. Sometimes the other way around. They know where I got on and not off. So I only get charged for one interchange distance (and not the 30 kms I actually used).

me too. I had to use it yesterday.. long ride on it - lets hope it doesnt show up. ;-)

but it was nice riding on it.. most people were at 120-140 speed range.

Had a close call with a peice of cement the size of a small dinner plate flying down the road and bouncing off the car next to me.. lucky I was able to accelerate out of the way !!! good having that power on tap at 100+km ;)

My plate is in the same place, but I linked it to my car account to avoid the $50 charge PER TRIP!!!!! Let's see how often they charge me.
