Can't remember when a horn has ever stopped someone from coming over into my lane, they don't react at all. Now kicking the side of their door really gets a reaction, but not in a positive way unfortunately.
Really, my Stebel gets their attention every time. You still have to keep your eyes open & practice defensive riding, but a short blast of the Stebel just as they are about to start a stupid move is about 80% effective at getting them to back off. Those are the ones who give the apologetic look after. The other 20% hesitate, then procede to cut you off anyway because they think that they own the road. That little extra time is always helpful for braking, accelerating, or doing a quick serve out of the way (which ever is your best exit strategy given the particular circumstance).
I installed the Stebel after an old guy decided to merge all the way over into the left lane. Holding the stock horn didn't work. Accelerating did, my rear peg hooked inside his front wheel well and I pulled his front bumper off. I stayed up without a scratch. Got to love all the plastic on todays mini-vans.
I wouldn't have a bike now without a Stebel. Also works well for sending deer back into the woods.
