Aftermarket Stator/Stator Cover

Just in case I need to get a new stator, has anyone tried the aftermarket ones? Usually I don't like to buy cheap electricals, but the price difference is $100 between OEM and aftermarket. (almost double the price)

As for stator covers, do you foresee anything going wrong with buying one of these: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Engin-Stator...ccessories&hash=item27d3f51d82&vxp=mtr&_uhb=1

Otherwise it's another $200 for the cover. (my current cover is shaved from a slow lowside). Could it be that bad? Worst is I buy an OEM gasket right? Has anyone purchased this type of aftermarket ebay stuff?

I bought a new stator to fit an old Suzuki from rmstator in Quebec. Lowest price and free shipping within Canada. And it still works after three years. I also replaced the regulator/rectifier with a used one from a newer Suzuki.

I would replace the cover. There is a chance it was slightly dented and your stator might start hitting the flywheel (happened on my old bike, owner crashed and repaired the cover badly)

After market stators are hit and miss on quality(And TBH some of the OEM ones for older bikes have QC issues). Anyone with an older Susuki GS will tell you that cause our R/R and Stators were terrible.

Currently i have a Honda CBR 1000 R/R on my GS400 and the stock stator. But I expect to be looking to replace the stator in a while.

The consensus from the GS community is that Ricks motor sport electrics provides a quality product.
RMstator isnt bad.
Caltric isnt bad for the price but i would not say its any ware near OEM quality
Electrosport industries used to have great products but over the last few years their burnout rate has increased.

Another option is to rewind your current one or find someone who can provide that service.

I Suggest to get a used one in good condition that is with no scuffs would be awesome. Then for piece of mind buy GB Racing engine covers and you're good to go...it'll cost you a bit but if you are planning to keep the bike for a while I highly recommend it! My kit should be coming in today or tomorrow.

That was very informative, thank you.

I guess being a purely mechanical thing visual inspection is all that's needed to check over the stator? Just make sure the coils are all connected and no burn marks, gouging, etc. and it'll be good to go right? Maybe I will poke around for one but I'd rather just get my bike up and running asap if I can't find any.

Test the coils with a multimeter. Make sure they are the correct resistance value and none of the coils are shorted. I deal with these problems all the time. In my mind there is no amount of savings that will justify installing an aftermarket stator (or a used on for that matter). If I am forced to use an aftermarket part for the charging system: I order 3 of them, because more often than not 2 of them are no good right out of the box (goes for CDI's too).

When deciding: factor in the cost of doing the job again - down time, parts, labour, towing, battery, friends laughing at you etc.

I removed the stator cover to inspect the stator and found one of the coils burnt! I'm gonna have to order a new one and gasket and then properly test the R/R.

Have had an ebay billet cover since the date in the pic no problems! As for stator I would spend my money on a used OEM stator, I have had one from a 1983 ascot 500 for 3 years now in my 2000 929RR with no issues....but I did go through 3 stators in a season from RM stators.....then he would not return my emails or calls after the 3rd one went!

LOL having voltage drop for last 5 weeks.....have another ascot stator in the garage mabey get it in this weekend! hope its not any problems in the harness....don't yeah miss your 929RR....lol

I tried to do the tests but I was getting ridiculous results. From memory let's see...

Generator coupler - odd occasion I could get 0.3 ohm, but most of the time it varied, maybe 75ohm, 80 ohm, etc. I could never get consistent readings

R/R - i was doing the test in the manual (checking voltages between R/R and stator, and the R/R) and basically all I got was either 0 or 12V (spec was something like 0.3-1.8 or something like that).

I had someone come over and try to test it too but they couldn't get a straight answer from the bike. I ordered an OEM stator + gasket for the time being. I have a feeling the R/R is toast as well but just hoping the messed stator is giving weird readings.
