The town by-laws in Caledon and Oakville use the SAE J2825 procedure which allows 92 dBA at idle measured 50 cm from the tip of the exhaust and at a 45 degree angle from the line of the exhaust pipe/silencer. At 2000 rpm 96 dBA would be permitted for twin cylinder bikes. (100 dBA for 3 and 4 cylinder bikes: if more cylinders 96 dBA)
BUT....... if your ears are ringing after a 30 minute ride - and you are wearing a full coverage helmet - then the bike is loud enough to be capable of damaging your hearing. Which is too loud. You may find it tolerable to ride if you wear good hearing protection equipment, but it still may be damaging your hearing in the long run. If it is too loud for you on the bike it will be a nuisance to any of your buddies who are riding behind you, as well as to the general public.
Do yourself, your buddies and the general public a favour - go back to the standard pipes.

hey guys.i know most guys on this forum are on crotch rockets with a few cool guys on cruiserslike me.so i just put on Vance and Hines Short shots with standard baffles in place (i think they are only there to keep them somewhat legal.)i knew these would be loud...buy holy fack... my head is ringing after a 30 min ride and ive got full face helmet on.so anyone know what the actual legal limits are and now its has to be tested?

The problem with the short shots is that they are short pipes. Like long shots, and straight shots, they are longer pipes where the sound is behind you. The short shots ends about where your back is and it's supposed to be loud like that.
Quiet baffles is a solution that V&H makes.

I'm kinda thinking that it's not your shortshots that are hurting your ears. The sound is left way behind you when riding...i'm guessing you have exposed ears and the wind buffetting is killing your drums.
i have shortshots as well, and while they can be obnoxious if you really turn up the revs, i don't find them crazy loud at all when riding.
