Free Bike Pending...

Friends going away Nov 1, around the world trip and returning around July next year. His options...
1 - Sell now for nothing basically just to get rid of it (he winterizes it at a shop as he has no space every year and isn't going to do it this year obviously)
2 - I keep it in my garage and allows me to track it next year as it will become his track bike when he returns

It's a 2007 GS 500.

Rare to see a gs 500 track bike but I know they're out there so is it worth using as a starter track bike for both of us or for him to sell it now for peanuts ($2000 to get rid of it) - Tires and sprockets will be changed along with suspension if tracked most likely.
 
******? 5hitty? - Well, maybe people don't think of getting as much use out of it, just want to get into track, budget??

For me, if I hold onto it for my friend while he's gone, would it be worth even tracking? it is a free bike (he's giving me all his things tv, electronics,etc). Im out of street riding so I'm looking at options to get into track, was looking at a 07gsxr 600 from a member on here but wasn't ready to pull the trigger this late in the season.

So, track a free gs 500 or just look into getting another track bike for next year...

Just a thought, but what happens when/if you crash your friends bike?...

Was discussed. The bike will be ridden to its death, its been dropped a few times, its a high km bike, value of it is low. I know its only a matter of time before one of us go down, but if so the bike will be parted out if there is alot of damage to get something back hopefully and if its not much, used parts are around - pretty much at the end of next year the bike will be sold or parted out regardless of crashing or not.

Shoulda bought the gsxr :wink: MUCH better track bike.

Yep that was the one, I wish I was 100% ready - sold pretty quick, was a great bike. And I see you got a new bike yourself, congrats. Have you been out on it yet, how do you like the 1000?

Well the gsxr was the first 600 I actually rode and so the 1000 is going to be a little more fun. Haven't been out on it yet, it had a minor lowside from the previous owner so I had a few things to repair but I'm going to shannonville on saturday and hopefully tmp thanksgiving weekend. Good luck with the gs.
 
Damn it wish I saw this earlier my friend just bought a 2008 gs500:(

73,842.....75,000 by the time he leaves in November probably, its his only transportation = high km I think for that bike.

Track it to death, IMO. If there are EX500s on the track, a GS500 is no different. Have fun!

Another thought crossed my mind - If I was to totally wreak the bike and little to no parts were able to be sold after the fact, about $2000 would come out of my pocket to give to my friend for the gs 500. I've seen some track bikes $3000 - $3500 so would it better to just get a track bike and run with it and hope for the best? It would be mine, a bike I can work with and get better on etc and be an overall better track bike then a gs 500....

Thoughts anyone?
 
If your friend can get $2000 for a GS500 with that many km's, I would say take the 2g's. There are only a few bikes i would ever consider buying that that kind of milage. A GS500 is not one of them.

Meh, seen and heard of riders with 600's that suck a**, they just go fast on the straightaways - rather ride a slower bike hard then a fast bike slowly but still keeping my options open.
 
you can get a 1/2 decent track bike for under 2k, it's already set up for the track and ready to go. I would have your friend look into long term storage for the thing so he has something to ride when he gets back, the mileage isn't terrible (probably due for some maintenance) but it's not like the bike is made out of sugar.

Yea he looked into that and most likely going that route. I'll look throughout the winter for a deal but if not come spring I'll be paying more but I'll be getting enough track days in so good use out of it.
