I'd also go with the 848.

Who works on your Ducati?

I went through a few Japanese bikes (GSXR600/1000 and so on) until I got my 1sr Ducati. Something very special about these bikes. Maintenance is not that bad either. At 15,000km with 0 problems, I replaced the belts and got the valves checked (all within specs) for $450.00. The bike is now close to 20,000km and still running great. Become my wife's bike and she is loving it.

PS: my wife's bike is a yellow 1098

thanks everyone for taking the time to respond...i used to own a 748 , did my own maintenance. it was a great bike but i finally got fed up replacing flaking rockers , and sold it ...vowed to never go ducati again. ....but the 848 dark has me thinking. it seems like ducati has upped their quality in recent years.
on the flip side i rode a 2012 gixxer last year and it was phenominal, especially the front end..big piston forks and brembo monoblocks....wow.
i think the 750 is easily the best value in the sportbikes world these days...

theyre probably both great bikes...i consider myself pretty lucky to have the "problem" of picking one. thanks again for the feedback guys !!

FYI

A friend is selling his 2011 848EVO Dark. It's a beauty. Maybe 5000-6000km.
Termis, BST wheels, pazzo, rizoma... Etc etc.
PM me and I can send you his contact info.

It was the first Duc I rode.
And now I own two. Lol

Seriously? Why hasn't he crashed on the 848 yet? I heard those those things are not newb friendly at all.

Maybe he did/has.....hence why he has an MV now.

Love my 848. Not practical but puts a smile in my face.

Pros:
Looks good and very clean, you get what you pay for
Sound..that vtwin baby
I have the Corse version so it comes with a quickshifter, traction control and some other shizznit.
Brembo monobloc..ridiculous stopping power. But the gixxer comes with brembos but I don't know if it's monobloc

Cons:
More $$$
Parts $$$
it gets freakin hot at traffic. you might get away riding with shorts on a gixxer but not the duc she will burn you.
1 hr max for me any more if painful. but there's a few parts you can buy to fix that.
You ride a Duc, therefor you are labelled as a d*uchebag prick poser whatever. Then again you ride a gixxer you're labeled as a squid lol.

All I can think of for now. Hard to type my comp is acting up but probably more cons than pros. But keep in mind nobody buys a Duc for practicality.

Gut out the cats and your problem is solved. Also sounds louder and revs more freely.

I've put Termies so that eliminated the cat kinda helped but not really. I've put up with it, I just try not get stuck in traffic lol. The bike is really fun to ride though so issues like the heat I'll tolerate. And that sound man after putting the Termies it really brings out what a Duc is suppose to sound like. That popping sound when you decelerate is very addicting, music to my ears.

..so its another crappy day out and im looking at the internets dreaming about a sportbike for this season...noticed a new gsxr 750 can be had from newmarket suzuki for about $12k out the door...about the same price as a nice used 848...would appreciate any thoughts you all may have on either of these bikes.

fyi, a bit about me and my riding style, ive been riding for about 20 years on all kinds of japanese and italian sportbikes ...been out of biking for about 2 yrs . like to ride twisties , do not hang out at timmies.

thanks in advance for your advice/opinions !
I have ridden both. I would go gsxr hands down. The Ducati is a great race bike, but for comfort for riding and actually being able to see in your mirrors, go for the Suzuki.

A bit off topic, I just started riding last year after about 17 yrs, got a 250 to get used to bikes again and for insurance purposes. I was planning to go up to 650cc either this yr or next. I've kinda liked the Duc 696 never rode it though, on the other hand I've rode my friend's Ninja ZX6R, loved the bike and the sound, can anyone give any opinions on these 2. Not looking to race or go really fast, just something a bit bigger with the power that's there when I need it.

Thanks

I would get the ducati just for the sound alone. Torque down low is nicer then lose your licence top speed hp.

Since I began racing my opinion on sport bikes has changes. I sold my GSXR1000 and have no plans to streetride a full fairinged, low clip-on'ed bike as a street bike ever again.
If the ZX6 and Monster 696 were the options, I'd go Monster just for seating position, and an upright dirtbike style tubular handlebar. Once you try a wide handlebar on a really twisty road you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

The 696 is a nice bike compared to its competition. If I had to choose between the 696, ER650, and the Gladius, I would go 696. But that is the only comfortable super sport I have found to ride for Ducati.

696 is not in the same class as a ZX6R. You compare a 696 to bikes like a Ninja 650R/ER6N, SV650, etc.

And I've read several reviews saying that the 696 is mostly inferior to those bikes. Especially when you consider the cost of ownership. It always wins for looks, though.

You ever looked at an ER6n or a Gladius? They look like sh** compared to a Monster. And when you start looking at the parts lists. There's no question as to why the monster is more $$.
And the monster is by far the most comfortable IMO.

I've never seen cost of ownership as a big difference(maybe if you're completely incompetent and pay a dealership to do everything)
The resale of a Duc is way better than a Suzuki or Kawi will ever be so...

I don't like the Monster's seating position, it doesn't work for me. But it is cool and looks way better than a Gladius or an ER-6N.

If I got a Monster, I'd probably look into a 796, or also consider an Aprilia Shiver 750. I'd like a bit more 'go' than the base 696, and the jump up in price isn't that high.

Personally, I'm a big believer in naked and sport-touring bikes as opposed to full-on supersport bikes. It's easy enough to get in trouble on a 'standard' bike, let alone a supersport.

I put the zx6 in the equation cos I can get that for $6000-$7000 next year my friend wants to get verseys 1000, n the meantime I got offered $3400 towards the 696 for my 2012 ninja. So after tax about $3900 towards $9500 Duc. Out of pocket about $7000

Not so sure if Ducati's hold a better resale value.
I've noticed that Ducati's take a long while before they sell, and anything Japanese (if priced right) will sell faster...

For the guys commenting on the comfort of sportbikes,I agree they can be real uncomfortable after a while, but I still love the styling so here's a solutuion for those interested. Here's a pic of my 09 zx6r with dirt bars.I just finished up the install(which was fairly easy btw)took her for a rip a few days ago and I love them.Cost a few hundred but was worth every cent in my opinion.I used an aftermarket triple but some bikes you can just drill stock oneView attachment 31464 View attachment 31465

For my bike I had to piece together the kit from different aftermarket companies but lsl/spiegler makes complete dirt bar kits for alot of different bikes,I think their cost for a kit is around 500.00
