Too much friction.

There is no friction the spacers are removed. The only friction is the bearings. Can use the axle on a couple jack stands instead. Or a couple garbage cans at the track. Or on the bike.

How important is balancing??

I've never balanced any of the tires I've spun on the KLR.

I’ve read opinions that rear tire isn’t necessary.
I balance both because I can and OCD.

Princess Auto has a motorcycle wheel balancer for $60, which is about as cheap as I can recall.

And that is a smoking deal. When I had access to a shop and a TIG, I made my own. By the time you add it all up, bearings, paint, time, you are better off buying. A few decades ago, they weren't so cheap.

This is much cheaper, easier to apply and better. Extra bonus, takes no room and needs no weights:
