Could be anyone riding a non e bike would get the ticket. There is almost no doubt of that. This is why those @ssholes shouldn't be allowed on the road with out tags/ins.

What pisses me off is for a moped:

-the driver must hold a restricted class M licence for limited-speed motorcycles and mopeds
-the vehicle must be insured, registered and have a valid LSM licence plate
-the operator must wear an approved motorcycle helmet

I don't get why these ebikes are being treated differently then a moped. They hit the same speeds and are just as heavy (actually heavier), and both have peddles.

i hear law enforcement has been unofficially told to take it easy on e-bikers...because they help ease congestion and are better for air quality....

So, +20 floors up at 0115ish in the morning with binoculars. This happens and gets you distracted from actually watching what?

They are being treated differently because they aren't a motorized vehicle, they go extremely slow. With a governed wire, they top out at 32 km/h- barely enough to get a breeze in your face and 49cc scooters go faster then that. I did however have an ebiker in the left tire track holding up traffic, she clearly was trying to be with the flow of traffic but that doesnt when work when you want to do 30 in an 80...........ya.

Re: 5 Cops, One eBike, 3 Cop cars, determined rider (sort of), rides away with a sm

They both have motors, one is gas other is electric, and they are both low speed vehicles. Ones is a max 55kg other 120kg. Not counting electric powered vehicles as vehicles is wrong. That's like saying the bikes that run in the Ilse of Mann TT Zero Race are not really motorcycles because they are electric.

From the MTO site,

Motor-Assisted Bicycles (Mopeds)
-is fitted with pedals that are operable at all times to propel the bicycle
-weighs not more than 55 kilograms
-has no hand or foot operated clutch or gearbox driven by the motor and transferring power to the driven wheel
-has a piston displacement of not more that 50 cubic centimetres
-does not attain a speed greater than 50 km/hr on level ground within a distance of 2 km from a standing start

Electric Bicycles ("e-bikes")
-Has steering handlebars and is equipped with pedals
-Have a maximum unladen weight of 120 kg (includes the weight of vehicle and battery).
-No modifications to the motor of an e-bike to permit it to exceed the federal requirements for motor output or speed for an e-bike
-Has an electric motor that has a power output rating of 500W or less.
-the motor is electric, and is incapable of propelling the cycle at speed of 32 km/h or greater on level ground, without pedaling

I fail to see the difference between a 55kg moped hitting something at 13.9m/s and a 120kg e-bike hitting at 9.7 m/s. The e-bike will actually impart more force.

It's ****** that I can't ride a motocross at a crawl on the side of a country road to get to a track with a full M, 20 years experience, and an unlicensed, uninsured, inexperienced scooter rider can. That is just wrong on so many levels. If they are on the road they should be subject to the HTA. OTOH, I love how they're pissing off cops. None of them know what to do with them as they haven't been briefed on the rules/regulations. So rather than hand out a ticket and looking like a fool in front of the crown, they're ignoring them or letting them go!

So guy rode in on a e-bike was stopped then took off in front of the police?

I'm wondering the same thing, holy hell this story is 50-paragraphs long and yet doesn't tell you diddly squat, I just keep hearing about an e-bike guy and a cop throwing their hands in the air, both of them drunk. I also think I heard something about a Hero coming into the action and stealing the cop's e-bike.

Re: 5 Cops, One eBike, 3 Cop cars, determined rider (sort of), rides away with a sm

Confirm that ebike guys have to at least obey the same laws as bicycles (with one or two extra add-ons, like "you can't remove your pedals" and "Helmets are mandatory"), which yes, means running red lights is illegal. In fact I'm pretty sure walking, running, or riding across red lights is illegal for everyone, no?

i hear law enforcement has been unofficially told to take it easy on e-bikers...because they help ease congestion and are better for air quality....

Actually there was supposed to be a crackdown on ebikes all of this month. Saw it in the news a little while ago, but I think there was a post about it on this very forum.

Anyway, it could also have been that the guy was clearly loopy-go-nuts. Not drunk or high, but actually cuckoo. Sometimes cops will just throw up their arms and let a guy go if he's clearly some marginal loco dude, because dealing with crazy people who just want to get away from you is pretty much always going to be more trouble than it's worth.

Re: 5 Cops, One eBike, 3 Cop cars, determined rider (sort of), rides away with a sm

E-bikes should be treated the same as moped. Ive taken a boot on one that topped out over 50k. They are just an easy way of putting drunk drivers back on the road. We all spent a great deal of time and money to to be on two wheels and these scroatbags are jumping on dodging traffic with zero knowledge of what keeps us safe.

toronto cops deal with crazy people by shooting them.
