2013 - Maybe a new bike

Hey all,

Have no posted here in awhile, but thought I would ask here first.

I have decided to upgrade from my SV650 to a new bike. The two I am considering are:

Yamaha FZ8

Honda CB1000R

I want a naked bike this time, can anyone offer any insights to either. I have searched google numerous times but all the info is simply specifications etc. Does anyone here own either?

Any insight would be great.

Also this is not a debate as to which one is better, that decision will be left for me to decide...

Hit up the January show and have a look at some bikes there.

I found the FZ8 to be a nice touring setup, not excelling at any one thing, but overall doing things well. Enough grunt for two up and ou can ride the things all day, good ergo's for anyone around 6'. Comparing it to an SV? apples to oranges. I found my SV had better torque and didn't need to be as rev happy but you can't go wrong with either bike.

Don't have first hand experience with the Honda, but I know after riding the FZ8 for half a season, I was looking for a Ninja 1000.

I will be at the show for sure.

My worry with a 800 is I'll be doing this again next years getting that 1000. of course so many answers will be provided when I get my insurance quotes for the above mentioned bikes.
 
I keep saying it... look up a Tuono 1000R. :)

I think Corsa has some used ones right now. Excellent bike and a lot more fun than a FZ8.

Thanks for the info, nice bike !!

The main thing for me is insurance. I'll add it to my list and see what it comes back with.
 
Speed Triple all the way! The CB1000R is nice but not as nice as a Triumph Speed Triple. If your upgrading from an SV650 the FZ8 may not be enough of an upgrade. Ask your insurance company what your rates would be on both of them.
 
Personally, I'd pick the street triple over the speed triple. I had a bike with the 1050, it was a good motor... but very dated and heavy.
 
Thanks guys,loads to look at I know, but I think 1000cc is the way to go for me if I plan on keeping the bike longer than a year.

They both are dated but proven designs ... why to **** with something which is not broken, right? Every year Triumph does something, most Triumph enthusiasts pray so they leave the motors untouched .... LOL
 
The 675 is on its third generation now, as far as I know. A few years ago Scott Miller had three 675s on the bench, one old and two new... the new ones (2010 model?) were visibly different not just in some of the designs but in metal alloy.
 
You never mentioned why you're upgrading or the type of riding it's for. If it's a power reason I would not suggest the FZ8. Lots of nice 1000cc nakeds out there to choose from.

I left that part out on purpose as I wanted feedback on the bikes without any bias. But for riding I tend to be a average rider, 80% in city 20% long trips. Nothing crazy when it comes to displacement that is more a factor of my size and the fact I do ride with a passenger from time to time.

It's on my list to look at. Though it has more HP than the Honda, I like the fit and finish of the Honda. Little more my style. But I'll be looking for a Z1000 at the show..
 
I agree with Sturgess Cycle... coming from an SV I always envisioned myself going to a Triumph but the Daytona R was going to cost me like 5 thousand more than a brand new R6. I still want a Street Triple R or Speed Triple to complete my garage though!

Scott miller, bench ... that means racing ... not exactly what OP is talking about. For street use one would not know a difference ... except for mileage. New 2013 should have greatly improved mileage according to the Euro tests, which of course is a bonus.

For those motors, yes. But I was talking about the differences between versions of the motor. They're definitely not the same. Lots of *visible* differences.
 
Fun times when contemplating a new bike, I am on my 20th bike right now. I would go with a used Tuono or a new generation z1000 if I read your wants correctly as I don'tknow enough about the Honda to say. I myself can't find anything I would trade my SV1000S to get, it has been modified to the point of near perfection for me and nothing I could get would tick as many wants in a bike. The Tuono would sound the best.

I'm thinkin this might be my 2013 mount...sat on it at least 5x at the show.

I liked the Vrod when I demo rode one, only issue I had was with the placement of the pegs. Coming from a VFR it made the ride quite odd.
