2004 gsxr 1000 6th gear

Hi guys, I am new and find this site very interesting.

I have an issue with my bike and looking for opinions.

End of the season last year, I was riding in 6th gear and decided to downshift from 6th, once I put it in a lower gear, and throttled, the bike did not seem to be in gear as if it was in neutral but I only went down one gear. I had to keep pressing on the gear until it was actually in neutral and was able to go back in first gear. The first time this happened, I actually pulled over and stopped and let the clutch go and the bike did not stall as if it was in neutral but the neutral green light was not on.

Any thoughts?

Just to be clear on the sequence of events - did you notice that the bike was not in gear after the first down shift, then pulled over and tried to downshift repeatedly while the bike was stopped?
 
That is correct. I went from 6th to 5th and throtteled and the move did not accelerate as if it was in neutral. Pulled over and stopped, not holding the clutch, the neiutral light not ON but until I got it in neutral, the the light came on.

Thoughts?

False neutral. Did the bike operate normally after this, or was it incapable of operating properly in some way after this, and if so, describe?

No it was fine, it only happened 3 times the entire season.

The shift star is about to fall off. There is a shift star behind the clutch basket held in by 1 bolt that comes lose. Eventually you will lose all gears. Happened to me last summer and is very common. Can fix it for you if needed.

Alternatively, it could be return spring on the shifter, which is what happened to mine. Same area, but $10 more to fix. If it's just the spring, shifting around neutral may be normal but problems start into third and above.

This is possible, I had the same issue on my track bike 03 GSXR600 last season. I now know that Suzuki has "discontinued" that bolt for the shift star in the early 2000s gsxrs as it was coming loose. The replacement is the same bolt with some red threadlock to prevent it from coming loose lol. Check out my thread on how to fix it if it's the same problem:
