1985 Yamaha FZR250 "PHAZER"

Does anyone know anywhere that sells parts for these that's not in Japan? The bike was only made for 1 year, so it's pretty slim pickings - can't even find a fairing set. Might need a new carb, not sure if the one from the 86+ would work on it - Want to make sure I can get the parts I would need before I buy the bike.
 
How much is a headache worth though? ;)

All depends on what you want. A depandable ride - skip it.
Something to flip - skip it.
A nostalgia piece that you personally admire - sure.

Parts will be tough. Resale value not that great - not a huge market for these. They are not like VFR400 for example.

On the other hand, nice looking, little machine.

For the money and time that it will take to maintain this I would buy something newer, with more modern tech. Kind of depends on your wrenching skill level as well.
 
I do work on small engines and my father does work on car, motorcycle, boat engines. I want it as a bit of a garage queen - need something to occupy myself on those boring weekends during college. Don't plan on reselling - when the girlfriend wants to get into riding, she can learn on a little 125 and then maybe use this thing. Just want it for a bit of fun and the experience.
 
Now back to the original question - since this model was only produced for 1 year, the parts -are- very hard to find, even through extensive searching I still can't find a single fairing kit. Anyone that has one of these, or that knows anyone that does, please let me know!

Edit: By "one of these" I mean a 1985 FZR250.

CMSNL has various parts for similar models in the year range so if you have a parts number you can see if its available for other bikes. I cant also guaranty you wont find plastics for it. This is the reason I gave up my Grey VT250FE to someone who could wrench way better than me it was almost impossible to get parts and they bikes were known for top end issues after 60k.

You might way to try wreckers in Australia and NZ allot of these JDM bikes still ended up in those places..
 
I looked into a similar bike a couple years ago. Other than cosmetic parts, there is some interchangeability with other Yamaha parts.

I was told the carbs from a Yamaha ATV would fit some of the older bike models. Look into it.
 
Anything important engine wise ... not wear/tear parts .... but more like oil seals bearings etc. ..... parts are discontinued, as well as rubbery boots for carbs and some other key things. You cannot interchange them with other Yamaha bikes, because they relate specifically only to these bikes. So make sure you are not buying a nightmare ....

Try to stay 1990 and older.
 
Yamaha is pretty good at old bike parts, and unlike Honda, Yamaha makes all parts available everywhere, not just in the market where the bike was sold.

The carb on that Fazer is a stock Mikuni VM, Winner's Circle has parts.
The seals and engine/trans bearings are generic so any bearing house can get them. The sticking point would be rods and pistons (Venolia will make you pistons)


Yamaha's are one of the easiest bikes to get parts for, and the part numbers are EASY to cross reference to other Yamaha bikes.
I'll take the little FZR if you don't want it. I restore Yamaha's as a hobby.
Suzuki likes the Yamaha model so much they have re-introduced thousands of old part numbers for the popular bikes. Kawi is next.
 
I was talking about carb rubber boots and crank bearings, not the generic ball bearing ones you can get anywhere. Discontinued long time ago. If the crank's bearings are done the engine is done, because case, crank bearing and crank itself will not match (unless you are willing to pay for pricey crank machining and mix matching. He would basically need another healthy engine. Crank bearing on Yamaha 4cyl. 250 & 400cc bikes are always a concern due to faulty assembly of the lubrication journal jets .... don't ask me how I know.

BTW, since Yamaha's are your hobby .... do you know where to get front brake caliper pistons for the 1991 3LN? ... 30 and 27mm dia. ... I need to replace them, looked at many places. TZR250 seems to use the same 4 pots, but couldn't locate one either.

They realized that vintage parts made Yamaha a ton of money. Honda used to offer parts support on older bikes.
