10W40 Oil

10w40 oil's do not have this.

10w40's are never "Energy Conserving" on the API service donut.
You won't find "XXw40" (or higher) with "energy conserving".

Hmmm thanks djl, I wasn't aware of that. A bit of research supports your claim.
I retract my previous statement with respect to 40+ weight oils.

You guys paying more for semi sycth realize that it's just too expensive dino oil right?

Zinc is a main difference between car oil and motorcycle. Google it and research it.

The little research I've done suggests that zinc is present in both and isn't any more necessary in a bike than in cars except in extreme circumstances (e.g. racing). The miniscule amount of zinc in motor oils is to provide a level of protection against metal-on-metal contact. Assuming regular street conditions and oil change intervals, this should be a moot concern shouldn't it?

I'm due for an oil change and leaning towards using regular (non-motorcycle) synth 10W40 so I'm interested to hear any arguments for or against.

i have usd 10w40 full syntetic, amsoil for 11 years in my 2000, cbr 929. ten bucks a litre, taxes in.get it at the bike show.there will be several amsoil dealers there.all have different prices, for some reason.the guy that was the cheapest is,greg desrosiers. 1 866 437 7659.this oil might not be the best, but ive had 50,000ks not a single engine fart.hope i didnt jinx myself.knocking on wood right now.my 2 cents.

Change your oil before storage, and every regular interval, and you will be fine...That being said, i use $5.50 per litre Crappy Tire oil.

Anyone use cheaper mineral oil than that?

Yes...
I use Castrol GTX and buy it exclusively when it's on sale from either Walmart or Cantire/Part soruce.. Usually 5 liters for about $15 - so $3.00 per liter.

And it may be the best, certainly nothing wrong with it. I put 75 000 kms on regular Bel Ray 10W40 over 20 years ago without the clutch even slipping until it hit 76 000 kms. Regular oil changes are the main thing after just using the oil that is OEM recommended in your manual.

Canadian Tire brand is all the spec we need, but keep in mind that when it's made using the absolute lowest grade base stocks AND additives possible (that's a fact when it's bid on for the lowest price by toll blenders, I used to make the stuff) you are getting the absolute poorest quality oil your money can buy. But even then it still meets minimum requirements.

I like Rotella T when it's on sale. Cheaper than Canadian Tire regular dino oil, full high grade synthetic, and guaranteed to have the highest quality base stock and additives possible. Nice combination.

Rotella 5W40 full synth all the way , for both my Shadow and RC51 . Great quality at a moderate price . In all the oil tests I've read , it performed at least as well if not better than all the expensive oils .
