Am 60+ and have used Grip Puppies on my bike for 10 years & swear by them. Good for cross-town biking and day long hauls.
They are a problem for small hands because they increase the handle diameter. But once you get used to that they are great. Oh and they are compatible with heated grips...
The weight? Nah... downsized from a Yamaha 1100cc V-Star to a 800cc BMW F800ST. The ST more than suits my rider style. I like curves and mountains and going fast! The V-Star was slow and ungainly going around tight corners.
Buy a bike that fits you and your own rider style.
Back in the late 80's I damaged my tailbone riding to New Mexico and back. It took about four years to be able to sit comfortably in a movie theater for the length of the movie. I started long distance touring again back in 2008 and still found problems (not too severe) on a VStar 1100 cruiser...
Did South to North (San Diego to Eureka) back in 2009. Was fantastic!! Only diff is which side of the road you are on and on the hairpins who cares :-)
Usually take a >3weeks trip each year in the U.S. Only booked ahead once or twice when it was in a remote location and I was spending a couple of days there. I have had no trouble finding motels at night thanks to my GPS. Canada though another story - not so many motels and expensive!. So as...
I have done coastal road a few years back from San Diego to the northern point of California (Hwys 101/99). Fog in parts and with riding next to the ocean it can get very cold and damp. At points I was glad I went north as the hairpins and the drop-offs make for very interesting riding. Make...
Just had my 800ST 60,000K service by Wolf BMW London. Had Wolf exchange my front wheel rim (Seriously dinged) with a rim that I bought on E-Bay (saved $800). Also Wolf recommended last year that I replace my steering damper (next year, 2013) but on inspection this year told me that it was OK and...
This will be my first tour, major or otherwise. I'm shooting to go late May, early June.
Take some heated or good thermal clothes. Temperatures in the mountains can be as low as 7c with a morning start temp of below zero.
2. My tires are 6000ish km old, Michelin Pilot Road 3's, which I will be...
I have been there in September several times on my bike and the temperature was OK. Hot but tolerable with the textile jacket I wear with the pinholes in them. Have to watch out for the desert storms, it is the Monsoon season there and the although infrequent, the storms can come up fast and...
I have a BMW F800ST bike so anything I want comes from the US. To avoid the Duty/taxes of having it shipped to Ontario or in the case of some US vendors will only ship to the Lower US 48, I opened up an account with SCC Parcel Service in Port Huron. They will accept a parcel on my behalf at the...
My local Dry Cleaners has replaced the "pull-up" portion of my zipper for a very low cost. I have a textile jacket and just had them put new Velcro strips on my cuffs and clean the jacket. Good seamstress!
I have carried a Netbook for the last 4 years on my yearly 4-5 week tours in the USA. I blog my way using TravelPod and for that I need the PC to transfer my days Photo's to the Netbook and then to the TravelPod website. As well as keeping friends and family informed (that you are safe) the Blog...
Had a VStar 1100 and vibrated badly when I hit 120+. Did Route 66 in the States a couple of years ago and could not sustain 75 mph comfortably for any distance which is the legal speed limit. Gas consumption at 75 mph was really bad was always scared would run out of gas with such a small tank...
