For the winter, turn the fuel off and run the bike until it dies to get most of the fuel out of the carbs. When you want to ride, turn it on, wait a minute, then start it. Normally much happier than having old gas in carbs.

Fuel Injection makes the reserve switch more complicated. You don't want to be putting a bunch of air into the pressurized fuel lines if you have a choice. Are there any carbed street bikes left?
