I'd suggest getting a cbr125 or similar, getting insurance on it, and parking it. Don't let the insurance history lapse in case you want to start riding in the future.

I'd be concerned about checking in helmet just due to the way luggages are handled, despite packing it well. I suppose one could always take it with them as a personal item? Would fit under the seat. Personally never came across a situation where I'm transporting motogear so I'm just thinking...
