I got behind one of Toronto's pothole patching trucks while in the car. Do they make a mess, it was like they were salting the road with asphalt pellets, the stuff was going everywhere. The tray at the back of the truck still had material in it. Doesn't seem right at all.

Doesn't sound like you have much options. As long as you can get something on the end of that wire, either female or male, then attach something after that, like you said a coupler, or some extension wire etc. to add some length. Not going to look pretty but hopefully it will do the job and you...
