Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

I watched when our other larger flat roof was done by the tradesmen. They put a membrane down and were meticulous with the seams. The problem is these guys are so much in demand it can be a year out before they get to a job. Also to be factored in is that if a sloped roof has an issue there's...

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

There's a peace of mind issue too. Not having to worry about when the flat roof will eventually leak will be worth a lot. The leak thing is bad news true. I couldn't understand why we only saw water dripping in the most humid times of the summer when it wasn’t raining, hence the condensation...

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Do they make prefab trusses for a 10-12ft width roof? This is a small roof in the grand scheme of things and it has weird angles at one end. Also I get you could cut a truss to any size but I'm guessing any bracing is for a larger roof. Edit: One big detail I forgot, the new roof would have...

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Engineers drawings for the peak roof addition will be $1400. Still waiting for the overall quote. In the meantime there are 4 industrial fans and the largest dehumidifier I've ever seen drying out the ceiling in the room. For spray foam application the wood humidity has to be 10% or lower and...

    Getting old sucks

Wife on holiday “look, tropical trees with monkeys in them and we can do yoga with this teacher on a deck looking out over the treetops, it'll be lovely” 5 mins later, my back : “twang”

    Getting old sucks

I went to play golf earlier this year and thought “hey, I'll be sensible, get there early and stretch as I'm older now” Threw my back out stretching. Done for the summer.

    Soccer/football thread 2022

Salah is off. Don't know what it is but his touch isn’t there yet. Maybe it’s age, who knows. Wirtz has the ball velcroed to his feet at times. I can see why they paid so much for him. Once he's fully settled he'll be a nightmare for other teams to deal with. Conor Bradley was great today...

    Soccer/football thread 2022

These Liverpool games are making my nails too short from biting them. Scoring in the last two minutes against Burnley. It's getting a bit tiring watching teams just try to smother Liverpool defensively. There's no creativity from opponents. I'm glad Burnley lost, maybe it will make other...

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Don’t discount these things https://www.amazon.ca/VOLISUN-3000K-6500K-Dimmable-Bladeless-Fandelier/dp/B0BXWLSXX1 I initially bought one for a room with a chronically low ceiling as these are about the lowest profile ceiling fans you can get. Ended up buying two more for other rooms. They are...

    Anyone here a cyclist?

If you get that from a Specialized dealer they will also do warranty work and a free 1y service thing too and maybe a “tighten everything up” quickie after a month of riding.

    Anyone here a cyclist?

Found this. That’s a discussion of what you can upgrade if you really want to. Looks fine for the price. Shimano disc brakes. Sirrus Sport Rack mount points so you can add what you need to carry stuff. At a minimum I found that I needed to swap out the saddle on every bike I've had except...

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

I've never had a heat pump before. I'm going to guess they make things comfortable rather than pump out masses of heat?

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

I saw that. These units heat down to -30C, the Costco ones I just looked at were -20C. Costco have Danby single units but they are decent prices.

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

My guess is the LG ones are a bit pricier but I'll look. I'm interested in one of these as the prices don’t seem outrageous, I can’t run ductwork to this area and I have a 220V circuit free near where it needs to be installed. Initially for the room above an unheated garage I was going to get...

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

That's the kind of thing I was looking for. 18000 BTU Dual Zone Mini Split Air Conditioner - Heat Pump - SENA/18HF/D Thanks. The Home Depot units were giants and cost 4K without the head units.

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

@madmike do you have a link for the multizone mini-split heat pump you talked about before? I see some at Home Depot but the multizone outdoor unit plus the indoor air-blowers are more than twice the cost of two single zone units which doesn’t seem right to me.

    Pickup Trucks

For the 1-2 times a year I might need a pick up truck I'm happy U Haul have the $19.99 option available. I like trucks, can't justify one. Edit: whoever opened the U Haul franchise in our city is a business genius. It's right opposite the Costco.

    TV shows currently watching

Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial on Netflix. https://www.netflix.com/ca/title/81561941 Really good documentary with some dramatized scenes and colourized vintage video. It's about the rise and fall of Adolf Hitler from a vagrant in Austria to The Fuhrer. The common threads tying...

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Sigh. For my roof issue I think the major damage is partly down to a satellite cable install (not me) from nearly 20 years ago I think. The cable looks like it helped water follow a course under the edge flashing at one area to a point where there was a small gap into the ceiling cavity. If...

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Weird shape. Second photo shows a bit of the tie in to the existing sloped roof. The stripes are what I did this morning to the seams. Sent from my SM-S938W using Tapatalk The wettest plywood was in-between the 3rd and 4th seam from the leading edge of the roof. That's a low point on this...
