    Donating to charities

I buy a provincial parks pass every year whether I use it or not. I like what they do to keep the parks maintained for access by everyone. I guess that’s a kind of donation too. Also about twice a year Altitude Sports have a charity event where you donate to a charity of your choice (there's...

    Daily sports car?

Gas prices and parking space issues mean that hot hatches are plentiful in Europe. The original was the Golf GTI but there have been some absolute nutbar lightweight overpowered small hatchbacks over the years. My wife had a special edition Renault Clio thing that she had on two wheels going...

    Daily sports car?

When I was in the UK we had a Chinese guy come into the group. He went out and bought a car and as we were all interested in what he’d got we asked what it was. “I got a great deal on this car, very powerful!” was what he said. He'd bought this…...

Not odd. Animals are better than people, in general. We keep our shelter supplied with blankets, dog beds, extra food and toys.

    Donating to charities

On a related note, every now and then I get asked to donate to “a trip to XXX to help with YYY by ZZZ”. Many of these are voluntourism orgs that exist to help pad resumes rather than assist foreign/impoverished communities etc. The truth is that the buildings and help the volunteers provide in...

Nord VPN have frequent offers, works well and manages their servers well (adds more when blocked). On the live sports front, a friends aunt's cousin allegedly told me “The Loop” works reasonably well in Canada with lots of streaming choices…..whatever that might be.

Northern Lights if the sky is clear near you

Lots of great pics being posted from 20 mins ago. Can’t see anything where I am right now but some pics are good even with cloud cover.

Not sure if the math works out now but quite a few years ago if you didn’t drive for a living and your commute was reasonable it worked out cheaper to take a cab and rent when needed otherwise rather than own a car. I suspect with gas prices that's not quite true these days but prices of new...

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Bylaw only go by dB not frequency. The neighbour's downstairs renter has an apartment closer to the hot tub and isn’t happy but doesn’t want to rock the boat with his landlord.

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

If it was on at night it actually wouldn’t be an issue. I can't hear it in the house but I can hear it when I'm in my yard though during the day. I asked her if she could schedule the pump cycles for the overnight period and she said no which was odd as I thought the biggest temp dips would be...

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Since the new neighbour moved in a year or so ago I hate hot tubs with a passion. She put the damn thing near my fence and it hums for ******* hours every day in the winter. The frequency gets right inside my head and makes it feel like it’s going to explode from the pressure She says she...

    Anyone else becoming more reclusive?

In Central and South America I've seen things I'd love to reproduce here but I'm not sure it's possible. In Panama City I watched entire streets of people huddle around TV's outside to watch a boxing match and in the old town in Cartagena when the sun went down people would sit outside and...

We used to pick up solid wood furniture and refinish it. No one wants to be bothered with stripping old varnish and sanding and restaining it etc so some stuff is cheap or free. We picked up a massive harvest table like this for cheap. Stripped the old varnish off, sanded, restained it and...

If you're super duper unlucky it may have glaziers putty on there too.

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Not doing a multi head mini-split heat pump/ac I don’t think. Will do 2x single units as that’s more efficient and gives redundancy in case of downtime with one unit. Plus we can spread costs out. Getting some quotes shortly and will see what those are like vs me installing the thing myself...

Take the doors off the hinges and transport those separately.

Holy ****. I'd fancy one of those but new they are hovering at $200k and used around $130k upwards for something with 100k kms. Wow, I never knew they were so pricey.

I have a fountain in my garden that I bought years ago. It’s cracked in places, it fell over once and broke a bit off. I fixed the leak, patched it all up and it holds water and looks fine. I keep doing this every year and probably will continue doing so until it decays. Once the water is...
