350 cc to 500 or 600 cc would probably be ideal. Don't want to have to worry about blowing about on the highway and like the idea of having some extra power when carrying extra weight (camping gear, a passenger, etc.).

jcbarnar, yeah, I like the style of those eras of bikes, and as for size, I'd say I'm open minded. I understand that a 200 cc bike and 700 cc bike are two very different machines. I just figure I need something that's at least 200 and really shouldn't go any bigger than 700 for my first bike...

Still saving up, but once the time comes to actually go look at something, I'll post more information and try to get some in return. Thanks for your replies.

Oh, one more thing. How much would you spend on a used bike? I was hoping I'd be able to pick something up that runs for under $2,000. Between 2 and 3 grand more realistic for a decent used bike?
