Cheapskates Corner

When they took down a huge maple in my back yard they wanted $1000 to cart away the wood. My neighbour was happy to take the free firewood. I also occasionally get free wood baked pizza from his oven.

    Jokes

I know a guy whose son runs the working part of a crematorium. He tells everyone his son is a baker.

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

I'm looking for a solid oak dining room table to come up cheap at Restore. The top will get cut into slats for the "free" cast iron garden bench ends I picked out of someone's trash, not realizing the wood and stuff to restore the thing was going to cost me $250. I thought of skid lumber but if...

    Cheapskates Corner

We like antiques but they usually get repurposed into a different use. Our Hoosier is the catchall needed in the kitchen, plastic bags, snacks, rarely used but handy items etc. I have a secretary (Writing desk with drop down front) in our bedroom. It holds my sock and underwear.

    RV & Trailer Discussion

Google RV delamination and you get lots of hits. A friend has a trailer / RV and his supposedly "Higher end" one was delaminating in a few years. He shrugged it off as an acceptable evil and does his own fixes by pouring epoxy into the wall and squeezing the wall back together. It came with an...

    RV & Trailer Discussion

If you think you're getting screwed by bad decisions, the used RV market has slammed the back-to-the-land types on the west coast USA. During Covid used prices tripled from $4K to $12K but if you lived in the thing, the numbers worked. Now the numbers have changed and the prices have gone back...

Has the city lost it's mind...

Oh goody. Someone gets $$$ to redesign the street signs and the installation is paid for out of the general coffers.

Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

It happened to a friend. A slow roll over into a ditch with deep snow triggered the air bags. The car was pulled out with next to no damage, but the air bags went off. The cost of new bags exceeded the value of the car. It's a scrapper that he can drive but only sell as a parts vehicle.

    Cheapskates Corner

I brazed the broken handle on the lawn mower. I would have just bought a new handle but they're obsolete. A well worn leather coat still had a good back so it became a leather apron for the shop. It sheds sawdust and is to some degree, fire retardant for welding jobs.

Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

While some mandated features are government mandated, I get the impression many house related ones are from trade lobbyists. I'm not sure where sprinklers are with new houses. They add thousands to the already high costs and are of limited value from a life saving point of view. Think of the...

    Not sure how i feel

If she gets her own bike she might not like riding pillion, especially if he's an idiot. A safety course might teach her what to look out for.

Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

Last night I watched a video on how VW grew from a couple of dozen 36 HP jokes in 1950 to becoming a major force fifteen years later. I had a 1962 and a 1966, enjoying the thrift and utility. If I had the storage space and $10K to $20K to spare, I'd have the 66 back for show and shine events...

    Auto Dealerships

Auto has an interesting history. They'll calculate into the price the life and limb liability costs to shave a dollar off production costs while upselling models by thousands of dollars with a dollars worth of vinyl trim.

Where are the Toronto Jays fans

On April 9, Guerrero signed a 14-year, $500 million extension with the Blue Jays.[76] $325 million of the contract will be paid as signing bonuses each season, and the contract has no deferred money and does not include...

    Anyone else becoming more reclusive?

How do you quit FB. I can't get them to stop notifying me every time someone I barely know comments on something. I try to avoid politics. That ship has sailed. Some estimate 1% of the world population has written a thesis. That means 80 million original theories on what works. Half of them...

    Spam Callers

Got a text from, supposedly 407ETR, saying I owed them a few $$$, final reminder. Remit to a dodgy email address. I resent the waste of time. If I reported it, I would be told that there are too many to investigate and blah, blah, blah. If they took reports and legally kicked the crap out...

    Science news of the day

FWIW a dark shingle roof gets into scald temperatures in summer. I got second degree burns from working on mine for a day.

    Cameras cameras everywhere...

Years ago the OPP put an officer on a bridge over the 401, armed with a radar gun. A gaggle of fast moving cars came along and seeing the cop, slammed on the brakes causing a multi-car collision.

    Knowing Better

Ditto on the oil. Then a shot of stabilizer in a full tank and plug in the battery tender, leaving the battery in place. With the Sportster I drained the carb. The boat engine got fogged. The marina did everything else.
