Official 2012 Summer Olympic Games Thread

Who cares. All you can do is test. Until you get a positive, the west should STFU and stop acting as if their **** don't stink. If the consensus is that the Chinese sporting federations don't do good enough effort of OOC testing, then their athletes should not be allowed to compete to begin...

    Running.. ugghh

Restarted running about two months back. It's been a grind with the heat and all, but I'm finally starting to see some improvements. Set to the track to do a tempo 5k yesterday expecting around 22 min, half way through realized I could get under 21. Ended up with 20:34. Very happy with it...

running in extreme heat for cardio conditioning and increasing resistance to heat.

I think it depends what your goals are. If you are in shape and just trying to get acclimated to the heat then that's probably fine (I'm no expert on heat acclimation) as long as you don't dehydrate, etc. As for getting in better running fitness, probably not as you are unlikely to be able to...

    Running.. ugghh

You'd be surprised how similar the training for a half/10k/5k is. The differences are mostly in the finishing touches.

I'm not a big fan of barefoot running. Most people just don't run enough or run at inappropriate paces for them and then wonder why they got hurt. I'm sure PTs love the barefoot running... keeps the business flowing in. Personally I'll take racing flats over vibrams any day.

    Running.. ugghh

Depends what you call competitive. 20 minutes 5k is a very respectable time for us average joes. As with anything, at the beginning there are some easy to have gains: lose weight and getting your pacing right. If you haven't run in a while, chances are you suck at pacing your effort optimally...

    Running.. ugghh

Congrats on the 35 minutes PR, but if you really went 45/68 (even with few minutes fixing your top, say 45/60) all I can say is Ouch. That's a pretty major positive split, and sounds painful :). Do you think you went out too fast or did you have other problems during the second half? Hope you...

    Running.. ugghh

Haven't run (or done any physical activity, unless you count home renovation) since mid Dec, no time. Fitness is in the crapper right now as a result. Hoping to be able to restart my mid summer maybe earlier.

Try looking at a fixed object directly in front of you at a reasonable distance away at first.

Is that one of those foot pods on your shoe? I'm not familiar with this one, but I heard that some of the foot pods can be off quite a bit if you change your stride. I heard people calibrating theirs on an easy run, then do a faster run to find the measurement off as much as 10%, so if your...

    Running.. ugghh

I find that some treadmills read low/high on the speed. The speed difference could also be due to cooling or due to inaccurate route measurements outside (ie short).

    Running.. ugghh

This past month I got some consistency. About 4-5 runs / week. Not where I want to be, but not bad. I'd like to aim for at least 6 runs per week. I'd like to get to around 50km/week by the end of the year. Ultimately I'd like to be around 70-80km / week by spring. The plan is very...

    Running.. ugghh

Well, I got around to running that 5k. About what I expected ( 20:48 ). Went out too hard and faded pretty badly in the last 2k (4:19, 4:23). The effort felt good (ie I was spent at the end). I have a lot of work to do if I want to break 19 by spring. 19:30 may be more realistic. If I...

    Running.. ugghh

Sure, but then four years later in Tokyo he ran over three minutes faster ... while wearing Pumas. The Africans run barefoot because they cannot afford shoes. The ones who can, run in shoes. Just look at any major marathons/road races and the Africans that compete in them (all wearing shoes).
