Use a grinder to take out the old mortar, you can disturb alot more bricks and give yourself a bigger headache by beating on the mortar joints with a hamer and chisel. Grind it out and repoint as others have stated, easiest way out of this situation. Been doing this for 20 odd years if that...

If you want to take a trip to Huntsville, I've got a header pipe off a 98 zx9r you can have. Its in good shape and taking up space.

My 98 zx9r will give light backfiring or popping noise through the carbs, mine is probably a jetting issue. My bike hates the cold. Just a thought.
