What is wrong with the USA?

Resurrecting this old thread because at least some of it was intelligent. To add to my "What is wrong with the USA?" rant, I'd like to add the following comment. The USA spends billions of dollars intervening in conflicts all over the world, militarily and diplomatically. They try to...

    RIP Amy Winehouse

People have been watching her suicide for years, it was just happening in slow motion. Now it's complete, and the show's over, so I guess some people are sad about that. If you felt anything for her and wanted to help her, you would have stopped giving her the attention, fame, and money that...

    RIP Amy Winehouse

You know that "demons" are just a figure of speech, right? There aren't actually demons, that can win or lose. There's only the individual. I suppose she was talented, as she had 2 records, one of them a hit. She was also quite popular. But she died because she was addicted to drugs. There...

what electric shaver do u use?

I'm into the gentlemanly arts, so the straight razor thing sounds pretty cool. But from a practical point of view, I think I'd get annoyed of all the stropping and lathering every morning. Might be a nice treat on a weekly basis, though. I used to use an electric - philips. Found it was...

Iphone lap timer? do they work well?

Yup, it's got TMP. I'd also advise that you buy the app a few days before your track day. It is a little hard to understand how it works, and takes a bit of playing around with to get it set up right. You don't want to be spending your time at the track futzing around with your phone.

Iphone lap timer? do they work well?

I used my iphone at my last track day. I used "Harry's Lap Timer", which seems to be the product of some German dude named Harry. I was very impressed with it. You can download a huge variety of tracks for free from the database, and Calabogie, Shannonville, and Mosport are all in the...

    Managing amateur track day risk

That's a good synthesis of the conversation here. You've definitely got the gist of it. At the end of the day, in motorcycle riding, you're responsible for everything that happens, because it's your body that's going to hit the pavement, and pointing fingers after the fact doesn't change much...

where to buy a pop-up tent for resting during a track day?

I've been using the Costco-bought "Caravan" model for a few years now. It's been doing pretty well. Goes up and comes down easy, seems stable and well made. I have a small tear at the top, but that's from my improper handling as opposed to the canopy itself. Currently fixed with duct tape...

    Managing amateur track day risk

A lot of folks are talking about when it's ok to pass in the corners, but that's not what I was referring to. The point that was made earlier, by someone else, is that some of the enforcement of rules is inconsistent/nonexistent. My post was: I'm not talking about passes after the apex or...

    Managing amateur track day risk

Nah, it doesn't cheese me off that much. My only point was that it's a violation of the rules, and I've seen it more than once or twice.

I'm pretty sure the marshalls have a good view of Temptation at Calabogie.

    Managing amateur track day risk

Agreed. I ride in the yellow group, and I've been passed, on the inside, in corners where it is expressly against the rules. I've yet to see anyone disciplined for it. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen anyone disciplined for anything on the track. I'm sure it happens, but it's not...

Know of any boots for those 'blessed' in the calf region?

Another vote for the Dainese Torque. They make them as the Torque In and the Torque Out. One of them you tuck the leathers into, the others you leave them on the outside (put some velcro inside your leathers at the cuff). I have the ones that you tuck the leathers into. The calves are...

    Managing amateur track day risk

If they're not crashing or causing a danger to anyone, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. If they're safe and having fun, they're having a good track day.

    Managing amateur track day risk

I agree with this wholeheartedly. The only comment I'll make is that hopefully there will be an effort to collect the facts and ultimately draw some conclusions. Usually when it comes to track incidents, this usually doesn't happen. It's more of a "don't talk about it" kind of deal. I'd...

    Managing amateur track day risk

+1. As a private pilot, I spent a lot of time during training, and subsequently, reading about and analyzing incidents and crashes. It's taken as a given in the flying community that an important part of avoiding an incident is to study existing incidents. The NTSB publishes their results...

    Managing amateur track day risk

My apologies for the implication that these particular crashes had to do with hooliganism. That wasn't the intent of my post, but in reading it now I can see how it might read that way. I was only trying to say that Pro6 run excellent days with good riders. I've been with other organizers...

    Managing amateur track day risk

I've got upcoming days booked with Pro6. Of all the organizers, they're the last I would think of this happening to. I've never seen much hooliganism or bad riding at any of their days. Can't say that for every organizer.

    Managing amateur track day risk

Read my post again. There's a difference between improving your riding, and having an artificial goal of moving into a certain group. Again, I know my opinion will be in the minority. I don't subscribe to the "crashing is inevitable" school of thought. I didn't use that thinking when I...

    Managing amateur track day risk

When I was in green, I was happy in green and had no intention of moving up. Eventually I found myself passing a lot of people and experiencing big speed differences on the track, so I started riding yellow. At the moment I have no intention or desire to move to red. Just want to go out on...
