Is there enough demand for a middle-weight sport-tourer?

Get a used 2000-2003 CBR1100xx. Sportier than a VFR, ridiculously fast, and can handle some decent sized hardboxes with grace. That said, my only complaint against my old 2000 VFR800 was a lack of over-the-top power. That bike is a spectacular sport-tourer, more nimble than the CBR1100xx...

Road trip across Canada: bike versus car?

Indeed. This is something the rider needs to find out for himself during those other multi-day trips; how many hours a day is comfortable, and are you inclined to stop at every sight, or are you out there to feel the road under your wheels? I know that I love the feel of the road under my...

Road trip across Canada: bike versus car?

Doing a solo motorcycle road trip across Canada is freaking spectacular. The suggestion that you do a smaller multi-day camping trip or two is spot-on. Get used to packing on the bike, figure out what you need to weark, how often you need to do to stretch your legs, your back, your...

Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

Aren't we all motorcyclists here? I just left my winters on my car this past year, because my car only gets used maybe a dozen times to short jaunts during the riding season. My motorcycle kilometers were over 10x my car kms in the past 12 months.

Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

I ran with all-seasons in winter for years. Things were fine, but every couple of years, there'd be a butt-puckering moment on the highway when I hit a patch of black ice and the car would begin to lose control. Once, I wrapped my car around a telephone pole after some black ice in a corner...

Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

While I wish more people ran with winter tires in winter, I don't want to see it become law because then it may mess with winter motorcycling. I discovered that while Germany has a mandatory winter tire law, they exempt motorcycles. I can't expect that same exemption in Ontario.

I am looking for information on European motorcycle tour packages.

My personal suggestion is that you just rent a bike or ship one over, and use knopftours.com . knopftours takes care of your insurance, shipping (cheap if you care to ride it down to Orlando), rentals, B&B, ride suggestions, local tour of Heidelberg and area, maps, motorcycle maintenance and...

Condo giving my bike the boot

In my condo, the rules are maybe subject to interpretation. They state that "a vehicle of no more than ... lb gross vehicle weight may be parked in a spot.." and that unpowered objects like trailers and bicycles are not allowed. I've been getting away with parking my car and my bike in my...

Park in Front Motels &Trip Advisor

I picked up a GPS Snitch for the motorcycle. It has a motion sensor, GPS, and GSM. It will SMS me if something happens with or around the bike. Makes staying at the inner-hallway motels a bit more relaxing. I often stay at Motel 6's in the US, which tend to be consistently clean...

    last night 401 east

Everything I have read says that it is indeed legal in California. They specifically changed the laws to allow two vehicles to be side by side in one lane. They added limitations around it so blame can be assigned. Technically, you have to signal every time you wander from one side of the...

    last night 401 east

California's lane filtering law is pretty reasonable. No more than half the speed limit, and no more than 15 miles an hour over the flow of traffic. You cannot leave the road surface (meaning no shoulders, even if paved). Best practices include riding in the left split if you're on a 3 lane...

How do you text while riding?

You could get a RAM mount for your handlebars to mount the phone on. Then it'll be easier to manage one handed. :) Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

    Heinous Increase with Jevco!

Surprisingly, my Jevco rate for my 2000 VFR800, theft, fire and specified perils, went down about $100/year to $675/year. Jevco's rate for my 2003 CBR1100xx was out of this world; $3224/year. I ended up going with TD/Primmum for about $1650/year, though that does not include...

Anyone own a Garmin Zumo 660?

I've come to appreciate the help I get from Lane Assist when I'm touring and find myself having to cut through cities. It really helps warn you precisely which lane you need to be in, instead of that last second mad dash in traffic to try to make your lane. If you tend to tour in unfamiliar...

Anyone own a Garmin Zumo 660?

I have a Zumo 660, and I really like it. I thought the older Zumo 550 was more refined, but I won't do without the lane assist feature, larger screen, better shape and generally faster operation of the 660. I've been tempted to upgrade to the 665 because the XM radio and traffic features are...

Anybody with a Sport-Touring Motorcycle that Tours?

Yeah, I've seen that. However, I am not a fan of music over bluetooth/A2DP. I've tried it a bunch of times and I just haven't found the transmit/receive quality to be acceptable and then there's the matter of the battery life. That said, that is a nice feature. I'm just jazzed that you can...

Anybody with a Sport-Touring Motorcycle that Tours?

There's also the new Scala Rider G9, but being new, it is hard to get it 'for a deal.' For my bike, I used a Garmin Zumo 550 and 660 as a bluetooth gateway between my Blackberry and my Scala helmet headset. The headset was great for phone calls, and handy for music or audio books. However, I...
