As this bike has a hardtail there is no need to add slack to accomodate suspension movement. Leave just enough that the chain isn't tight.

I'm surprised that someone would ask the GTAM crowd the answer to a medical problem. See a doctor and find out what is going on. Carpal tunnel typically is indicated when the thumb and first two fingers go numb. I had surgery 20 yrs ago on both hands and never a problem since.

They certainly aren't fragile. I have several quite old bikes and sometimes, insurance being what it is, they can sit for a year or two (inside) and start up and run just fine.

You still can't measure from point to point with a piece of string! There is a way of using string to align the rear wheel but it has nothing to do with measuring. I deal with vintage bikes every day.
