I think it's time for this thread to die gracefully before we get into weird arguments about gear vs. skill. The question was about gear quality and I got a lot of great advice about it, arguing about the importance of gear vs. skill is kind of pointless since they're both obviously important...

hah, I just realized it sounded like some sort of after-school special.

That alone triggered my b.s. detector and I hope other new riders can see it too. As a new rider I will not have good riding ability. If anything that makes good gear MORE important to newer riders (not that's it's not important for experienced ones).

As I've said: Avoiding an accident is ideal, no doubt about it. But **** happens and when it does I want the most protection. It might not help in a devastating crash but if the added armor makes a difference between a scratch and a broken bone or a ligament tear I'm willing to invest in it.
