You're supposed to put your left foot down and cover the rear brake with your right. As mentioned, stopping in neutral on the regular is not the best idea.

You're 100% right of course but distracted driving is as much to blame. I've been conducting my own informal survey this week and more than 70% of people are on their phones at red lights.
