Why rent gear if you can buy a DOT approved helmet for $40-50 ? And it's brand new and not worn by hundreds of people. That's what I did when I did my course, it's almost the same thing as renting and you won't feel bad if you chicken out. Besides those rented helmets are pretty much useless...
