KTM's Parent Company Isn't Doing Hot, Shifting More Production to China and India

If you include scooters, Piaggio sold 436,000 in 2023. Not sure if a scooter counts differently than a 390 etc. Was a bit nervous about their health, but turns out through Q3, despite a significant drop in sales for 2024, they're still quite profitable. In other words, not everyone was caught...

"Back brake only, you'll crash if you use your front brake!"

Bike design definitely plays a part, for sure. Cruisers and long, low, touring bikes carry a lot more weight on the rear tire, and transfer less weight forward as the forks compress, than something tall with a short wheelbase, like a sport bike or trail bike. I remember a magazine article from...

    COVID and the housing market

Listing that I see has 'As Is' tacked on to the end of the description. Major red flag, definitely something for a realtor to check into. When we were buying in BC back in 2015, we looked at a very low-priced house that had a similar caveat. Turned out it was a former grow-op (twice...

KTM's Parent Company Isn't Doing Hot, Shifting More Production to China and India

This is actually much worse than I thought. Seems they couldn't get Bajaj to buy in, so are now unable to pay their bills. They will contort a million different ways to avoid saying 'bankrupt', as that would crater sales even further than they already are, but they're in real trouble. I can't...

    Favourite hand tools

Bought a set of these (1/4", 3/8", bit driver) on sale a few years ago, and they've become the tools that never leave the bench. For all but the biggest fasteners, I almost never actually use a ratchet now, just jump straight to torque wrench on final assembly. I absolutely love them, they're so...

What did you do in your garage today..?

I can't speak for the smaller ones, but the 3.5 is about as reliable as any truck motor out there. There may have been some teething issues in the first MY, but those have long since been ironed out. I have had F-150's with both the 3.5 and the recent V8, and I would take the 3.5 if I was buying...

Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

Less than 10 years ago, we bought a few mid-tier F-150's (3.5 ecoBoost motor, 4x4, XLT, supercrew) for foremen that were decently equipped at a shade over $40k each. Just ran a similar configuration through the Ford website, and they equivalent is now north of $70k. Like houses, vehicles got...

Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

Wow, I'd forgotten that. First and last 'reality' show I ever watched. I remember it being on the cover of the Toronto Sun when they announced it, and everyone on the job site I was working on talking about it and the $1M grand prize. Weirdly, an Aztek didn't feature in that conversation...

Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

The only one I can think of that was close was the Hummer H2, but it wasn't that close. Hated by urbanites for being too big, greenies for being wasteful, army guys for putting the Hummer name on something so plastic, off-roaders for being terrible in dirt, rednecks for being too 'urban', car...

    Social Media

I loved Twitter for the immediacy of it, especially for things like sports. Anytime there was a Liverpool game, with the right follow list, it was a great accompaniment to watching, with journalists and fans in the stands giving an angle that you didn't get with the stream. Same for MotoGP...

Does North America even matter any more for motorcycle sales ?

Depends which manufacturer you're talking about. North America is still a key market for Ducati and BMW, along with most other Euro makers. Even for the volume Japanese manufacturers, I'd love to see a breakdown by revenue and profit. Selling a $10,000 USD bike in North America is 7x the...

Rant: pulled out of my M test

At least it's fall, better than being stuck in the spring!

Who's still riding? (Fall & Winter 2024 Edition)

Headed out near Fonthill for some work stuff today, and the dash thermometer said 15C on the way out this afternoon, which was glorious. Ended up getting stuck past sunset, so was a much chillier 8C on the way home. Definitely the last one of the year, though that's now the third time I've said...

Who's still riding? (Fall & Winter 2024 Edition)

That tank bag on that tank is a sight to behold. Looks like a face-hugger from Alien... That said, as long as it had room for the delivery, then job done...

Jinx, you owe me two Coke. Also, great minds think alike, and fools seldom differ, etc.

Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

Based on my recent experience, they've overtaken BMW and Audi as having the highest percentage of absolute sausages behind the wheel. Not sure how much of that is related to the self-drive modes, but I've learned to steer the f*ck clear when one is around.

What did you do in your garage today..?

No LED's in my garage, though I did install a 200W incandescent bulb that doubles as a space heater for the empty space above. I do need to rearrange the lighting, as the current setup has one of the two fixtures blocked by the roller door when it's open. It's also the one above the lift/bench...

    Tyson v Paul

It's sad to see the sideshow that boxing has become, where there's far more interest in watching someone close to pension age fight a loudmouth amateur than there is in any real fight. The real problem is the total lack of structure and long-term thinking at the top of the sport, with...

    KTM's in trouble ?

Small update on this front, though I have learned that RideApart are to be taken with a grain of salt. I think they've predicted the imminent demise of Harley-Davidson consistently for the last five years... https://www.rideapart.com/news/740888/ktm-pierer-ag-sold-sell-off-revenue/ Still, it...

    e-sim recommendation

Glad you got it sorted. For future reference, I bought a 10-day unlimited use eSim from Giant Tree for our last US trip in October, and it worked well. Used the TMobile network, though I think they sell others. Cost $33ish, I think. Much cheaper than the Telus Easy Roam at $14/day, and where we...
