It turns out that Barry's Bay still had power, thankfully. So I still don't know the range of the KTM but coming home I got 235km indicated out of it and still had about 1/3 of a tank left. I can report that it gets better mileage at uhm... 5500 RPM in 4th, shall we say, than it does at under 5,000 RPM. That sweet spot in the rev range isn't just where the revs smooth out.

Still blows my mind that a 1301cc v-twin is getting anywhere near 300km out of a 17L tank. Especially with >180hp.

Classic case of computers making us stupid!
Back in the old days you never wanted to have to switch the petcock to reserve because it would bypass the filter.
Instead you simply made note of the milage when you last filled and stopped when needed.
One of the advantages of getting old is you have to stop more often for a washroom break so you fill up the tank while your at it.
 
I'm trying to think here... reserve petcocks give you the feeling of running out of gas, but you haven't actually run out yet, so I think I've only actually run out of gas twice. Funny enough both on a current bike, my TL1000S, which has a wonky fuel level sender (ain't no way I'm disturbing the fuel pump just to fix that). And one of those times was this year on the trip from my house, to a gas station
 
Ran out of gas with the KLR twice. Both times were a gambled & lost situation. Once used CAA to give enough, the other i laid the KLR on the petcock side and then rocked it to splash fuel from the right side tank lobe to the left and had enough to make the 2.7km to the gas station.
 
I remember my s40 stopped running when the tank was below 40% because the petcock didnt work. i pushed my bike approximately 30m to the petro in full gear in 33C blazing summer sun. I went to buy a new petcock the next day and swapped over the new one in under 10min.
 
I've run out of gas in cars and on bikes more than once. It would usually involve meeting a kind stranger or perhaps a mild adventure. A win either way.

So what happened? Lately I've been going to Port Perry the native gas station for cheaper fuel. Hop on the bike, and it tells me I have 90k range. Should be more then enough (from daHood to PP). I check this on my way and find out I should have 20 k left. Nope at about 25k range the bike starts sputtering and revving like mad. I pull over. Try starting it, nothing, lots of spark but no go.

CAA to the rescue!
(BTW they only give you 7 litres).

Worst part about this I was like 3k away from the gas station.... :(

So what the hell happened to your reserve fuel switch? You are supposed to turn it and it will give you another 20 km of emergency fuel.

What, this isn't a bike made in the 70's.
Show me a modern bike with that switch I'd like to see it?

LOL the industry got rid of it? Now, that's stupid. I used to have a 2010 and it still had it, now I have a 2017 but haven't checked since I haven't run out of fuel yet, going to check for it tomorrow. Now again, it they removed this from modern bikes it was a stupid move. The gauges are not that reliable as the OP found out.

Fuel Injection makes the reserve switch more complicated. You don't want to be putting a bunch of air into the pressurized fuel lines if you have a choice. Are there any carbed street bikes left?
