SMS Texts not going through

I know there's a lot of techy guys and gals here, so maybe you can help.

I had a Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) (yes I know it's old) and up until middle of last week (around August 13 or so) all was working fine...recently, I discovered that my text messages were not being sent (SMS)...I was receiving texts and responding, but didn't know they actually weren't going through to the recipient...so I did a restart, a shut down and power back up, deleted the cache and data on my messaging, and a couple of other things I found online but can't remember all to no avail...went to a Fido kiosk and he too couldn't figure it out...talked to a Fido tech support guy this morning who did a reset to switch and was supposed to call me back in 5 minutes, but forgot...in the meantime, I went to Staples and bought a new Samsung Galaxy A16...had the guy at Staples insert my SD and SIM cards and through Samsung Switch, we transferred everything over to the new phone...still having the same issue, only now, if I'm connected to the internet (either via WiFi or data) I can send and receive RCS messages, but not SMS messages...so I went to the Fido kiosk again, got a new SIM card, but the problem still persists...I have another phone call scheduled with a Fido tech support person tomorrow (August 19) morning.

Any other ideas why this would be happening, not only my 8 year old phone, but a brand new one? So again, when connected to the internet, I can send and receive RCS messages but not SMS messages.

Thanks!

Honestly sounds like something got scrambled on their end. I could speculate why but I've never had any visibility into the guts of cellular networks & provisioning and stuff

Nailed it.

Fido and Chat-R run on the same systems Rogers customers are - arguably with different QoS priority over the network when it is saturated.
I also suspect something needs to be corrected on your cellular account/profile.

Rogers used to use Comverse SMSC, MMSC and Voicemail products back in the day..it has since been rebranded a bunch of times.
When you call customer support, provide them with two accurate time stamps of when you attempted to send the (failed!) sms messages.
And ask them to escalate it to the Rogers Tier 4 support (I believe Ericsson now owns the wireless operations teams that used to previously be under Rogers).
Worst case, they can still look up your sms attempt using their Tektronix ss7 / Sigtran probes to see the failure reason.

If there is nothing wrong with their provisioning system or SMSC profile for you, I'd recommend they check the Adaptive Mobile (now ENEA) anti-spam platform (if they still use it). That platform had a tendency to pick up on certain key words and temporarily or permanently block certain numbers for a period of time. It was particularly useful to clamp down on people who'd send a large number of spam text messages within a small period of time - unless they were authorized to do so based on their account/profile allowances.

Curious to know the end result of your investigation!

I've had similar issues and my guess would be something off in your APN settings. Go into your APN settings and be sure they're set to the following. The issue could be as simple as our APN name is set to lowercase when it must be uppercase which was the problem in my case.

  • Tap on Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names
  • From the APN screen, tap on Options
  • Tap on New APN.
  • Enter a name into the APN Name field, along with these APN settings
    • APN: Fido-core-appl1.apn *If you have an LTE device, use the following APN: LTEMOBILE.APN
    • MMSC: http://mms.fido.ca
    • MMS Proxy: 205.151.11.13
    • MMS Port: 80
  • Leave these fields blank:
    • Proxy
    • Port
    • Username
    • Password
    • Server
  • Tap Options
  • Tap Save
  • You will now see the APN.
  • Tap the radio button in front of the APN to activate
Restart phone and test by sending texts.

Thank you for that very detailed response....I went into Mobile Networks and tapped on Access Point Names but I get two options either Fido Internet or Fido Tethering...Fido Internet is activated...I don't have a New APN option?

You're in the right spot. You should also see a + symbol at the top of the screen when you enter the APN settings. The + will allow you to add another APN. You can add a new one with the above settings and test that way as well. Name the new APN Fido (slightly different than your Fido Internet) that way you can toggle between your original setting or new APN setting.

May sound confusing but its hard explaining without seeing what your specific phone shows but all android phones are fairly similar
