Tory takes aim at noisy motorcycles

I rather the city focus on congestion, someting which will benefit everyone, then silly things like this

Like i have said before, the dump trucks going to and from the condo construction sites make more noise than bikes do.

It's not silly. The dbags really do negatively affect hundreds of thousands of people with no positive benefit to their childish behaviour. As most downtown residents (which I strongly suspect will be the focus of this blitz) don't commute by car, they probably don't care about congestion.

I expect them to target places like rosedale valley road where you can hear sportbikes from km's away as they go through the valley. Collectively, dump trucks probably add more noise to the city (although they are accomplishing a task while doing it), but any individual dump truck quickly blends in with the ambient noise once it is out of your line of sight.

Would like to see the cops target the HA annual event out my way. It's usually 24hrs of drag pipes behind my home. At least it's only once a year.

It would make sense from a compliance perspective (I am sure there will be a higher percentage of offenders there than a general population), but I can't see that happening for safety/crowd control reasons. Maybe checkpoints 10+ km out so they could deal with 10 bikes at a time?

Police need to be careful with aggressive enforcement too close to lawful gatherings. Didn't they run a blitz at the TMP gates before to collect emission deficient ricers? Great, now they avoid the track because it was shooting fish in a barrel and race on the street.

They tried a checkpoint behind my house a few years ago much like a RIDE check. Was funny to watch the bikes go right thru it all afternoon. Ya ya... Whatever.

I think there was a study about this in a smaller Ontario town, where the neighbourhood was down the street from a cement yard. They tried to put quiet measures in place but found out all the cement truck traffic was the cause of it all, nothing they could do. ?‍♂️

It gets funnier than that. An operator of a pit sued the municipality for excessive noise at their house due to vehicle traffic. The dominant vehicle traffic was trucks from their pit. AFAIK, they won some money. People that know how to play the game can extract amazing amounts of our money out of the guberment.

It was Halton region that did the noise study. Sideroad 15 was the problem. The study found that trucks from the local quarries made the most noise. A lot of the people that complained were employed by the quarries. Lol. And some of the locals were sweeping sand into the corners. Sad.

The dump trucks going to condo sites are a necessity. John Tory said it pretty well in his address: most downtown residents realize construction is inevitable, there is going to be some amount of noise pollution living in the core of a city. The issue is the straight piped Lamborghini’s ripping up Yonge at all hours of the night and all the folks who need 150db exhausts to feel safe. Its just pointless noise that exacerbates the problem. One guy revving an engine at one of the major intersections can easily be heard by 100+ condo units.

Are we comparing a utilitarian vehicle that has an engine five to ten times the size of a motorcycle engine?

Then there's also the fact that probably HALF the moto population of Ontario (and i'm being generous) is used more of a leisure vehicle than a utilitarian vehicle.

Residents will probably accept construction related noise that increases their property value vs people just enjoying a ride on the town late evening/night, reverberating away against all the skyscrapers.

But aren't there laws in place already for this stuff. I remember years ago all the civics with annoying exhausts then the city did something with the laws etc and the next year they were pretty much gone.

HTA charge for improper muffler. It's pretty terribly written (and includes a reference to a "Hollywood muffler" which I have never found a definition for). Toronto by-law revision has an actual sound level limit. Without the push from council to enforce, I have only ever heard of the improper muffler charge as a value added ticket.

I don’t think the HTA actually defines a “Hollywood muffler”. But IIRC it’s a brand name for a glasspack exhaust. Basically a straight pipe wrapped in fiberglass sealed in a larger diameter outer pipe. Wikipedia “glasspack”. Less backpressure, poor sound baffling. Bit of a antiquated term.

I never knew a by-law had been revised with the sound limit? Do you have a source?
From what I gather its up to the officers discretion. If they are in their patrol car, windows up and can hear the muffler then its too loud. lol
Such nonsense. There should be a scientific measurement using a DB meter.

Noise laws are insignificant compared to federal law which very clearly forbids any form of tampering with a vehicles emission control equipment.
