Speed camera update (Sept.11)

Perhaps if the various cities had put speed cameras just in appropriate areas, instead of plastering them all over as Patric Brown has done, there wouldn't have been the uproar that made Ford push fro their banning? Vaughan voluntarily discontinues their more limited use in September.

The whining from Brown et al was insufferable. "We promise we'll change and only put them in school zones and not artificially lower speed limits and set a reasonable and disclosed threshold. Just don't take our safety away". Wtf. You could have done that before. You still won't admit that this is entirely about revenue. Always talking about doing better in the future with zero effort to actually do better.

And Brown is a lying sack, because he's already done that by extending school zones. For example Bramaela Road, past Bramalea Secondary School, used to be a uniform 60 Kmh. It currently has signs stating "Speed Camera Coming Soon" and, when that sign went up, the limit past the school was dropped from 60 to 50. The road that intersects Bramalea at that point, Balmoral Drive, varied between 50 and 40 Km between Dixie Road and Bramalea Road. It was 50 Kmh for the first 100 metres or so from Dixie, went to 40 past Balmoral Senior Public and St. John Fisher Catholic School, and went back to 50 Kmh all the way to Bramalea Rd. There are at least 2 speed cameras on that stretch of Balmoral Dr.

I've already mentioned the section of road that they dropped to 40 Kmh, that had been 50 Kmh for decades, just before they put in a speed camera. That's where I got a ticket for 11 Kmh over, in an area that I thought was still 50 Kmh.

And that's just one area that I'm very familiar with. The distance on Balmoral that has been reduced from 50 Kmh to 40 Kmh has more than doubled.

I had fully expected some municipalities to put up large signs on all access roads advising the entire city / town was declared a "community safety zone". That would have allowed doubled fines everywhere and cameras on every street. Fortunately that never happened and now the cameras are about to be a bad memory. They have no one to blame but themselves because they are the ones who killed the golden goose by going so far beyond what most people would consider reasonable. But isn't that always the way? Love it!

I expected that to happen too. I'm shocked it didn't. Although with Brampton putting in 180 cameras, while they didn't officially declare everything within the boundaries as a csz, they seem to have effectively gotten close with hundreds of smaller areas.

I’m curious if you get a ticket after the what did they set as the end date,

If you still are obligated to pay it?

Chowder for brains now wants dougie to cover all the lost revenue from cameras. I thought this was about safety? She didn't even wait for the deadline before dropping the farce and going to the core of her issue.

I hope we're all happy now. Instead of just doing the posted limit we now get to putz from one speed bump to another. Let the festivities begin.

I'd be happy if politicians stayed the f out of speed limits. Set them at 85th percentile speed, enforce for people exceeding that by a reasonable margin, enforce where it makes sense for safety instead of where it is most profitable.

OK. I agree it's fun to dream but now we're getting speed bumps.

So they remembered it's about 'saftey'. I can live with that.

I do all my hooning south of the border anyways.

It's not all about profit. Some of it is about governance by sound bite. Gotta seem like you're doing something for the electorate.

Ridiculously low speed limits. Photo RADAR. Speed bumps. Advanced walk signals. If it's all about pedestrian safety then how about enforcing the jaywalking laws and stop these idiots from illegally jumping into intersections when there are two seconds left on the countdown? Almost nailed another one today, while trying to make a right turn on red.

City buses have air suspension, and they're driven by drivers who don't own the vehicle they're driving. My street recently got speed bumps, and the buses don't even slow down.
My wife complains as there is one street in Barrie with speed humps and I put my tires through a gap and run hers over the hump. That works fine at the speed limit. I might be able to straddle the hump but I'm not convinced my car would clear and plastic oil pan means things would get expensive fast. Many people slow down to 10 km/h which is an expected but insane consequence of the infrastructure installed.
