New Yamaha R-7

Personally, naming a parallel twin that is in no way, shape or form anywhere close to what the R7 stood for is sacrilege to the original.
Hmmm that cp2 is a great motor. Let’s wait for the reviews.

agreed, unless they can pull out 15 more hp + throw on some great suspension and brakes. it'll be a great rs660 competitor.

but if it is just tweaks and a faired mt-07 with clip-ons = more like a blazer than bronco situation.

Great as it may be for what it is, it's no comparison to its rare and original 160 hp namesake.
Nor is it meant to be....

all faired sport bikes from Yamaha carry the R moniker. Engine displacement is likely around 689cc.
With the above in mind what else would they call it?

Anything Yamaha R* has been a supersport, and yes I'm including the R3 and R125 based on styling. This new R7 isn't even fully-faired, more like the original half-faired FZ750. They should have come up with a new name, or maybe something like MT-07R or MTR-07, just something that doesn't carry the higher expectations.

Its just a rendering though. I don't think real life pictures have surfaced yet. Best to wait and see

Dont know how yamaha will compete with the aprilia, I know its a 660 and AMA has certified it for the twins cup but its comparable to the mt09/street triple/duke 890 in most respects (performance, price and tech)

That thing has serious stomp by all accounts

I rolled my eyes when I saw they were planning on calling a faired MT-07 an R7, but the reality is only motorcycle nerds of a certain age recall the original R7 as something special. It's not even like it was that successful (though it was gorgeous), failing (by a whisker, poor Haga and his Ephedrine) to win the WSBK crown that was the reason for its existence. It's no RC30, that's for sure.

Everyone knows what an R6 and R1 are, though, so no surprise that Yamaha wants to capitalise on that brand recognition. If it's an actual sportbike, with a more highly tuned motor, stiffer chassis, and decent suspension, fair play. If it's an MT-07 with a fairing bolted on, not so much...

Maybe I'm just sour because I used to have a '93 ZX-7R. Kawasaki did an amazing job of diluting that name.
Yep. Ninja stickers for everyone! Not a cruiser? Call it a Ninja!

No one knows this. The illustration that accompanied the original article was someone's imagination at work. "Young Machine" appears to be the source of that illustration ... they use their imagination a lot.

And it is quite possible that they will try to give Aprilia a run for their money.

One rumour I heard was that Yamaha has been sitting on this bike for a while, waiting to see what Aprilia did first. From what I can find, the MT-07 has about 70 rwhp, give or take. The RS660 clocks in between 80 and 90. If they can bump that motor to 80 hp at the wheel, keep curb weight roughly 400 lbs, and keep the price around $10k, it'll be a winner.

Yamaha knows about the FZ07/MT07 roadrace conversion kits. (I know a couple people with those; they work well!)

The power output is the potential hiccup. Dunno if you've noticed, but quite a few manufacturers have been applying the same engine in what looks like widely differing bikes lately. There's more to that than just saving money on tooling ... they're also piggybacking the emissions compliance across the whole line. All the bikes that use that engine with the same emission control equipment and are close in GVWR (not really relevant for bikes) are "the same" for purposes of OEM emissions certification. Means the engine in this R7 is practically guaranteed to be EXACTLY the same as the engine in the MT07 and the Tenere 700 ... and it hasn't got the jam of the RS660.

Or maaaaaybe they figure out a way to boost the power output some while maintaining emissions compliance, and apply that across the rest of the lineup that uses that engine ...
