just kicking tyres at the moment, but starting the process of planning an extended ride in Africa. Any information, experiences or general interest is most welcome. thanks.

haven't ridden there
but I've worked/lived there

I'd highly recommend Tanzania
so much to see in one country
lots of decent accommodations where your bike would be secure overnight

never felt a threat to my personal security anywhere
but anyplace these is disparity of income
you have to careful with your stuff

+1 for Tanzania. Our daughter has spent some time there. Wonderful place.

thanks...yes the disparity of income is a problem, just because one is "western" and therefore affluent...

Almost went to S.Africa in 2017 for a moto trip instead of Thailand but was cautioned against it due to the civil unrest. Keeping it on the TDL.

Was in Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Seychelles for a non moto vacation earlier this year.

Will post my pics as you have interest, any questions feel free to ask!

yes, RSA is a place where a group may be advised. I have talked to one group, Zulu Overland, who were really helpful and I may do a guided with them and then take off on my own...(I also scuba dive and the Seychelles are high on my TDL...)

I edited above post with some pics, Seychelles are near the end. It's a fantastic place, shame it takes forever to get there (relative to Canada).

My SIL got back from Africa 2 weeks ago, she did a Safari with her family. She felt safe on the tour everywhere by urban South Africa. Another family on the the tour had their Uber hijacked by a band of taxi drivers in Johannesburg -- the family was not hurt but the had to witness their Uber driver draw his last breath from the trunk of his burning car.

My wife and I spent close to a year and half riding motorcycles around Africa, I think around 13 or 14 countries in total.

My advice is to stay in South Africa with your motorcycles. The landscape and geography is perfect for two-wheelers, especially if you're comfortable with off-roading. The mountain passes are astounding, but the best ones are unpaved.

Another country to explore on two wheels is Namibia, but all the destinations are sand and gravel. If you're a street rider, you won't enjoy it.

The problem with the rest of Africa is that it's mostly flat and not that interesting if you're on a motorcycle. Check out a topographical map and head towards the countries with mountains. Malawi was interesting.

Another issue is that if you're going to Africa to see animals, you won't be allowed to bring your motorcycle into the national parks and do a safari on two wheels. Something about motorcycles looking like antelopes to the lions and other big predator cats: meals on wheels.

So what you have to end up doing is parking the motorcycle outside the park and hiring a 4x4 or a go on a guided tour. Totally defeats the purpose of riding around on a motorcycle.

Our blog is slowly getting updated with our Africa trip if you're interested: www.RideDOT.com

I'd recommend anyone going to Africa
to put Ngorongoro Crater on the bucket list

simply stunning, a natural Jurassic park
there's a road down into the crater
not sure I'd ride down there though
lots of stuff eating other stuff

Yessir, the crater is/was awesome!

View from the resort at the top of the crater. Man, if you thought the road to/from the Serengeti was bad..lol...trying to get here was a nightmare.

We got to see that herd of water buffalo wake up some sleepy lions and force them to move off. Water Buffalo are the most dangerous of the big game, who knew!
