I own a Daymak Em2. (Fully insured by Canada - Oasis Pedal Power Insurance)
I also own 2019 BMW M2 fully loaded (insured by State Farm)
A 2009 Yamaha R6. (Insured by State Farm)

I have a clean record, live DT Toronto in a million dollar condo.

I prefer riding my Daymak Em2 over my R6 in the city as I don’t have to pay for gas and makes sense on DT Toronto city life. it’s hard to speed in this city because there’s constant traffic all day long.

I’ve also been riding since 2007.
I’m planning to Build my own electric motorcycle from ground up and use a Honda dirt bike as my base to convert to electric. Electric motors are the future, gas technology is ********.

I also wear full gear head to toe all the time. No exceptions. I also ride my daymak like a motorcycle not on the bike lane. Yeah my daymak does more then 32kph, I just keep up with traffic, but I am fully insured and have my license. I wouldn’t paint one brush for all Ebike riders.

Does it have a licence plate ? Is it still equipped with the vestigial pedals ? If yours is deregulated and goes over 32kph you are in contravention of the current law. Play by the rules.

I’m in the process of registering the bike and getting plates and slap a 8000w motor so I can take it on the highway. Paperwork in process. And yes it has its pedals still lol.
 
Most of the time I am doing speed limit as Toronto DT roads are congested. I barely use the throttle and just it just cruise speed as if I was holding the clutch. Most roads DT are 30-40. It’s waste of battery to really go much faster due to stop and goes. For highway rides I still take the R6 or long distance rides. Leaving town.

Technically I agree but if TSquared is being factual he really isn't a problem. He has an M license and insurance. I suspect he doesn't have a plate because the government doesn't recognize his bike.

I have actually purchased a custom motorcycle plate under my name but not attached to any bike yet. I as I said I’m working in process of registering the bike as a motorbike and will so then and will upgrade the motor to make it go 140kph. That will be fun. Of course at that speed the bike must be registered. The Ebike was my gateway to EV technology and how simple and cheap it is to upgrade and maintain. Makes so much sense. I was going to buy the Zero SR, but 30k didn’t make sense. I was much cheaper upgrading an Ebike to spec, which will cost about 8k to make it do 140kph and 150km range with j1772 level 2 charging.

the zero srf does 200kph ,340 km range. But it’s 30k lol oh and charges from zero to full in 80 mins.

Good on you. I trust the brakes get upgraded as well. The Fred Flintstone ones that come stock aren't going to do much at 140.
 
The Daymak EM2 is the one that looks like a copycat of a Ninja 300. I've seen one of those keeping up with traffic on Dundas St in Mississauga. Presumably it's really easy to defeat the speed limiter ...
 
Just a question, but changing the brakes and tires is one thing, but is the chassis able to handle higher sustained speeds?
 
I am intrigued that you can get proper insurance for an ebike. That's a good start. What is the ballpark price?

I would be shocked if you can get legal insurance after your modifications. The ebike policy expects a 500w, 32 km/h bike amd they are getting an 8000w, 100+ km/h machine (I dont think 8kw will get the 140 you are hoping for). Almost every policy I have seen voids the policy if you modify the vehicle. Your planned mods are beyond substantial and would easily show up in even a trivial crash investigation. So that probably eliminates the ebike insurance. What motor vehicle insurer will insure a home built no vin motorcycle without fraud? Those havent been allowed at the mto for a long time and even getting insurance for older short vin bikes is hard.

He is planning on 2 kw less than a honda 125. I dont expect more than 100 km/h out of this. I have had a few bicycles going fast and they have all been perfectly happy to at least 70, on one handling got shady at 80 (head tube/fork flexing concerningly), the others I ran out of hill before I had a problem. I would hope the ebike is at least as stable as a bicycle, but you might be right, they are chasing price point and the shoddy suspension may catch up to you.

If you keep it stock, insurance is $340 a year. If you mod it will be insured by State Farm once I get the proper paperwork and plate it.

someone else did this mod state side. And registers it a real motorcycle.

the most expensive upgrade is the battery. About $5000. Just increases range. Speed upgrade isn’t expensive. About $1000.

How does state farm insure it? Does it have a 17 digit vin?

I am sure you can register it as a real motorcycle in some jurisdictions, but I would be very surprised if you get this done in ontario. I know one person that homebuilds vehicles amd registers them, but he uses the vins from a donor vehicle.

Yes they have 17 digit vins when you buy them from daymak. Even if you import it from china it comes vin. Looks like you never did any research on the subject. It can be done in Ontario 100% how do you think people register home built vehicles. It’s 100% legal. Just requires a lot of paper work. Not easy.

How do I Title a Homebuilt Car in Ontario?

Also my insurance for my Ebike has my vin number on my policy sheet. 17 digits correct.

the vin is on multiple parts of the bike in-graves into it.

It's not a car, it's a motorcycle. Different rules.

It’s the same process but slightly different. You just a hater lol. Btw riding all day today. DT Toronto, barely do 20kph in traffic.

I have my R6 for out if town missions or my car. It’s mostly used for traffic rush hour errands. Save money on gas. Riding an R6 or a Manual car transmission in traffic sucks. I only need to register this bike if I want to go high speeds, which I am process of It possibly on another bike build I plan to work on.With EV bikes, you can easily swap components Into another bike for example, I can easily convert my R6 to an electric bike with the parts on my Ebike. But that would be a crazy downgrade and pay too much insurance for the speed.

for me the Ebike conversion mod to highway speeds is to save money on insurance, gas, and less maintenance. It’s basically a home brew EV. It’s a cheaper alternative to buying a Zero series bike.But for me the biggest upgrade I would want to have is range upgrade and faster chargers.

I plan to do a few real bike electric conversions. And making custom Bikes because it’s so easy to do. I would register them all as street legal motorbike. Building an electric motorcycle is so much easier to do and requires very little maintenance. you can test and build your bike I your own home as there is zero emission.

I am far from a hater. I think it is a really cool idea that would be a great vehicle in many situations. Just the knobs at queens park feel the need to poke their finger into things and make good ideas hard to implement while allowing dumb ideas to flourish (a 120 kg uninsured ebike always has been and always will be a really dumb idea, keep the weight to 25 kg or less and they make a ton of sense or get a license and insurance if you want to ride a cannonball down the street).

I do feel that these things should be required to be insured. Because you never know what can happen. Accidents happen all the time.
