Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

If I had a longer commute and was using more gas on the Magnum (which is a fuel pig as it has the Hemi engine, so it gets basically pickup-truck fuel economy) the math could quickly swing to a near wash for us, but at this point work is only about a 9KM commute for me.

This is what is really driving it for me. My commute is 140km daily, with a ton of stop and go. I really need a new job... As much as I like getting my hands dirty working on cars and bikes, I'm really looking forward to the Bolt for the near total lack of maintenance, tire rotations, tire changes, and wiper blades are pretty much it for the first few years. After that I think there is a coolant flush and that's about it for at least the first decade or so.

2015 Chevy Colorado

Only thing besides oil changes in 3 yrs & 3 months of ownership since new has been an issue when I couldn't get cabin heat. That turned out to be a pump as i recall that was covered under warranty. I can't see brakes costing any more than the Chevy Cruise upon which the Volt is platformed on. The car's been dead reliable and I'd buy another one in a second (in fact plan on when this one is ready to part ways with me, which could be still a long ways off).

The extra weight might be a bit harder on tires and possibly brakes. Regenerative braking might balance out the latter as few people use automatic transmission for braking.

Figure on about 6 or 7 km per kWh. Electricity prices vary widely but it would take outrageous rates to cost as much as feeding a gas car for that distance.

How much does it cost in electricity to drive let's say 1000 kms?

Depends on a lot of variables, but here's a simplistic average:

It takes between 15-18 kwh to go 100km. Let say 16 for the average.

Charging overnight during off peak times as most do (including 24 hours a day on weekends), at Ontario Hydros current off peak rate of around 7c/kwh, it comes out to about $1.12.

Less than the cost of a single liter of gas right now.

The math is simple from there up to any KM figure you want to calculate. :)

Yes, the variables and charging losses come into play that can increase the cost slightly, but even a 25% increase, well, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that it's still dirt cheap compared to a gas car.

There's also an argument that some make that you have your delivery fees and such tacked on top of the base electricity rates increase the cost of driving and electric car, however the way I look at it is that you are paying these anyways for your home, so I don't personally consider them part of the direct cost of operating the car. And again, even if you DO add them on, you're still winning big time.

Nice, thanks.

Any public charging stations offer free charging? Bolt says it can do 145 kms on DC fast charging of 30 mins.

Lots of free charging stations, someone posted a map before that shows the locations and speeds. I haven't heard of DC fast charging that is free for non-Tesla's.

They are out there – the mall in Peterborough for example has free DC fast charging in addition to regular level 2. I'm not sure what rate it charges at as there seems to be a lot of different options for amps when It comes to DCFC, but even if it was slow (by DCFC standards, still multiple times faster than Level 2) we could theoretically never pay for power to run a Bolt if my wife just went there and had lunch every 1-2 days while charging. She works just down the road.

It depends on your hydro rate per Kw/hr (which varies from peak to non-peak) but on my 2014 Volt it costs about $0.80 per full charge on the overnight non-peak rate which gets me in this weather 75 km. So 1000 km / 75k m x $0.80 = $10.67 in electricity.

So called "cell phone lots" around Pearson airport .... there's two lots on the Network Rd. ... here's link to one of them, second one is just down the road in the corner. Only few months old ... https://goo.gl/maps/MyigLzBeimL2

Plugshare.com shows chargers. Free DC fast charging with Chademo and CCS (i.e., non-Tesla) is out there, you can find it on Plugshare. Just don't use them when I need it! ;)

My oil was changed about 5 months & 10,000kms ago and it says around 80% oil life left for me. That might take a heavy dive when the weather gets colder.

Interesting. Please keep us updated.

I wonder if it's the Low coolant sensor issue.

Was it a SERVICE HIGH VOLTAGE CHARGING SYSTEM (SHVCS) message?

So, following up...yes indeed, it was the (common) SHVCS issue.

SHVCS.jpg

It started about a month or two back, was extremely intermittent, but I was able to clear the code with my iPhone/Scantool combination. I also knew what typically triggered it (the notoriously wonky sensor in the battery coolant reservoir), and since it was perfectly full and showed no signs of any leakage so there wasn't an actual problem, and in the end I wasn't overly concerned about it.

I did call OMS about the issue a few times but they said that the fact I was clearing the codes meant they wouldn't be able to address the issue - I had to take it to them with the codes still active, even though I had a record (as did OnStar) of what they were. On the flipside, when the code DID come up and I called them to try to get it in, they kept saying it'd be 3-5 days before they could "fit me in". In the meantime, since (for those reading) this code prevents charging, my wife would be driving 100% on gas until such time that they would even look at it, and since I already doubted their familiarity with the Volt in general I questioned if they'd be able to easily diagnose it even after the fact. Accordingly, I just pushed it off over and over again, and it was so seldom that it wasn't bothersome.

But a few weeks ago it started to get more frequent. Twice in one day, then twice in 3 days...and since the car is coming up to 160,000KM where the Voltec (electric drivetrain) warranty is set to expire I figured I'd best get it in soon.

I opted for a new dealership near where I live given my entire lacklustre experience from OMS. Those who have followed the thread for a while will remember that it took several days for them to even get the car charged properly for us when we were initially looking at it, then there was the brake caliper issue that I got some run around on..and then the OnStar issue. Admittedly they did fix it all at no cost to me in the end, but it was only after a lot of chasing and some strong negotiating - someone less strong willed than me would have probably gave up on getting both fixed, or just paid the nearly $1000 cost of getting the brakes and OnStar fixed.

Between that and the issues trying to get this issue addressed, I have moved on to a new dealer.

The new dealer on the other hand, well...I went straight to the service manager when I first called, explained the situation (as well as OMS's refusal to even see the car unless we left the codes active), and he said it wasn't a problem. Scheduled us in for first thing Monday morning and said he'd personally take care of it all. He also mentioned that they were very familiar with the Volt (having apparently sold the first one ever in Canada), and they had 2 electric techs on site. Cool.

Anyhow, it went in this morning at 7:30AM. By 10:30 or so they called and informed me that it was indeed the common sensor issue, and that everything else checked out fine. The part is on order an the car will be fixed tomorrow completely under warranty.

My friend is still loving his Volt. Last 2000 km and no gas used. He did have to take it in for his first warranty claim. The HMI module or whatever went. They swapped it all out, but if he didn't have the warranty, that's a pain.

From calling to getting fixed, took 3 days. Solid service. Guess dealerships vary with how they handle the Volt.

7L / 100km = about 40 MPG Canadian, the econobox ultimate. At $1.10 / L = 7.7 cents per KM for regular gas. Most drivers will be more like 10 cents+.

Saw a Tesla Model 3 at my local Tim's. Uh, is it just me or did that car get beat with the ugly stick? Never really noticed it in pics, but irl imo it looks terrible.

You sure it was a 3 and not an X? I am surprised one is here already given the pitiful production numbers.

brb...
Ok, checked out Google...I may be wrong, given that I saw it not too long after my eye surgery...but I thought it was a 3. May have been the X though. I will retract my 3 judgement until I can confirm.
That being said, you know how we do up here in da 'bridge....these wops have connections for everything. I wouldn't be surprised if they get a bunch of them up here.
Also, was in Oakville the other night and (unsurprisingly) saw a bunch of Ford Focus EVs. All this love for GM, but nothing for Ford?
