Re: Well, this will help the motorcycle image in Toronto!

Should be interesting.. though bet they don't get 8yrs jail time .

If they get more time for stunting than someone who kills a person by turning left, I have a problem with that.

Oh wow. That's pretty good actually. 50K could completely **** up someone's life who killed another. Though with 50k being the maximum fine, I doubt there will be many who get charged the max amount.

That is a good point.
However, how about doing it in proportion to level of income. Hit them where it hurts plus community time.

Six months in jail upon conviction could **** up someone's life pretty effectively too, and that's the CURRENT maximum sentence. I'm pretty jaded to increases in monetary penalties, pushed forward by politicians.

One week, hell, even overnight stay in jail, and then you're answering the "have you ever been jailed" question as a [Y] on some countries immigration paperwork, employement applications etc..

Hm, I did not know about the 6 months in jail part...probably because we've never read about someone getting jailed for killing another turning left =/

In general, Rob has argued that road safety and fundraising shouldn't be correlated. You want to implement the punishment that discourages future bad behaviour the most. Rarely would that be a fine.

If you don't want to hand out jail time, make someone do 400 hours of community service within a year. They will be so busy, they won't be able to enjoy life and will definitely remember the results of their bad decision.

What a horrid idea. Penalized more for being successful. How very Finnish of you... :)

A careless driving charge is one of the last charges that should have massive penalties associated with it. It is very vague and completely open to interpretation. It seems to be the fallback charge the police make when they can't figure out anything else. In many cases, obviously not all, there is no intent to go out and drive carelessly. A huge penalty is not a deterrent unless there is intent. Sometimes people just make mistakes, sometimes with tragic consequences....

I would agree but, this seems to be for 'careless driving causing death'.

... or give them jail time. Regular people rarely forget when their life was interrupted. I would argue that if you want "proportional sentencing", then that goal is met by imprisonment.

Re: Well, this will help the motorcycle image in Toronto!

Our jails are full. A guy I work with was jailed for an arrest warrant last Friday night. Took him to milton maple Hurst as soon as they walked into the pod he and another fresh catch were asked what they bought in . Both said no drugs sorry. They were then moving to the guards and were told to tell the guards they need PC. Race was an issue. Do you really want traffic violators in with rapists murders and the like? They will only come out worse then they went in. Community service on the other hand......

I love the idea of handing out community service rather than fines, but the pessimist in me thinks that so much of it would be handed out that it would start infringing on paid unionized government jobs, the unions would protest and strike, the government would cave, and we'd be back to fines after wasting millions (billions?) of taxpayer dollars implementing the failed community service program.

Toronto is dirty enough that it could use extra hands to cleanup
