Lots of time to grow a beard and get some flannel lumbersexual shirts.

Are we not over this "bike guys as life philosophers" yet?

Like the Wolverine (RIP) thread sometime there truly is nothing to say.

Looks like a fun movie. I guess some people are finding these "We eat, breathe, sleep, and live motorcycles" a bit tiresome and corny. I can understand, but you can't take it all that seriously. A lot of it is marketing.

It' s trope from the days of Pirsig, if not before. Don't see any reason to spill bile over it though. I understand that's the role of the internet these days though. Whatever puts more hands on bars is a good thing, I think. If the market looses any more economic clout, we'll all be legislated off the road to protect us from harm. Since riders have collectively done an excellent job of alienating the general public, they won't be shedding any tears. That almighty tax dollar is what will protect us. I wonder what the guys over at Visordown think about it?

^ Was chatting with well respected middle aged long time bicyclist recently. I was pleased to hear of his new found passion for motorcycles. He called his winter project "The CB". Then he started talking about pod filters and other styling treatments. Ya, he's predicting a fun first year at the helm and I'm sure it will be, but make no mistake it's a lifestyle and rolling testament to his uniqueness first and foremost.

Ooo.. can't wait for it, I smell exhaust pipewrap and ironic knobby tires already.

I feel like such a tired old hack with my comments but it breaks my heart to see mature people living a template. The young, I understand to a degree.

But how do you tell the difference between authenticity and a template, and is that difference at all meaningful to the person living it? Ones perception is ones reality. Who are others to judge? Just asking; never too old to learn.

C'mon Schneller I have nothing to teach. I just observe and run it thru my filter. Let me ask you this because you're my age: do you remember the muscle car era late '60's-early 70's? A lot of guys wanted a muscle car and if it looked like a refugee from DragWay Park so much the better. Some guys built some real good cars. They taught themselves the engineering and applied it as much as the wallet allowed. And then you had a whole raft of guys jacking up their cars for the exaggerated body slant and gumball tires. A single Thrush muffler completed the picture. No authenticity there that I can see. Same today with the cafe "racer" or want to be 1% chopper guy. It's about cashing in and riding the coat tail of the truly authentic. Now it's all fabricated and posed for on video. You see it in every walk of life. Just my opinion of course.

Pretty much everyone has something to teach. :)

The guys with just the big tires, jacked up rear suspension, and thrush mufflers maybe just don't have more money to do things properly.

Any time someone does something that's been done before and can't take it to the same level or further, is that an inauthentic template life?

i think the only problem when something is done or a lifestyle imitated, is if it's done disingenuously, not because the passion exists in their heart, but because they just want to look cool posing as such.

Maybe the guy with the Honda CB gave you that impression.

(1) Depends on the student?

(2) I'm taking a less generous view. You can play road hockey for the fun of the game. You could play road hockey and act like you're the next PK Subban. The second one is tiresome to watch.

(3) Not automatically imho.

(4) That's what I'm talking about.

(5) Very much so.

does it have to be cliche or ironic if your not first? cant it just be getting in on the fun? I think rat rods are cool, I dont have one , and cafe racers are still cool, maybe the mainstream tries too hard to include everyone. Some people need to belong, to something.
Then we get the guys that stay out of the mainstream and seek difference by "being the guy that doesnt watch TV" , like Crown Vics and seek out mom and pop coffee shops.
I'd argue its ok to like a look, I'm not a cowboy but I have a hat.

Inreb, I think we agree then.

Those living an inauthentic life provide their own punishment.

Good points but consider this. You're a sailor of some experience. I want to be a sailor. Is there something I could do that would make you think I'm trying too hard to fit in when it's obvious I don't have a good bead on the culture?

No need to look at cars. 90% of bikes selling on Kijiji have aftermarket items that do nothing but fake performance increases. Rarely do you see people upgrading pads, lines, tires, fork springs, cartridge emulators.

My favorite, full pipe systems and power commanders on 300s..for >$1000 for maybe 1/2 hp, and don't try and tell those guys the bike isn't much, much faster.

[ seriously ] But I quit that! I've quit ALL drugs. Well... let me say one thing: I twisted my ankle this morning, and I was in quite a bit of pain... so I went to the doctor, and I asked him to give me some pain pills. And he didn't want to do it, but I talked him into it. So he gave me some pills -- and I shouldn't have done this, but I took some about an hour before the show tonight, and right now... I am high... as a KITE! [ audience cheers ] I mean, it is unbelievable! And I would NEVER say this to you people, but, in this case: if you EVER get a chance, to take these drugs... DO IT! They're called... [ he glances from side-to-side cautiously ] Placebos! I mean, I'm thinking that right now I have NO idea where I am at all! It is WILD! Placebo!

You would be absolutely correct. And my summer sport is riddled with cliches, like people that wear foulies (wet weather gear) into the bar after racing, show up with everything brand new and wear T shirts and hats from regattas they never sailed in. In sailing world wearing a T shirt form an event you didnt compete in is our version of POSER. And then the counterculture that wear hawian shirts and mismatched plaid shorts and crocs because its not cool, or is it?????

You can pick downhill skiing, bicycling, golf, and even light weight camping. If you look hard enough every onion has many layers.

Personally I think its ok to snicker quietly to myself and leave them be, because they are snickering quietly to themselves and leaving me alone.
