Mileage

Perusing the bikes for sale section and I notice quite a few ads don't provide the mileage on the bikes?

That is one of the main considerations for my purchase, followed by overall condition, maintenance history etc.

What gives?

It's the gta. High mileage has been dubbed anything over 10k by the ever so knowledgeable crowd. They're afraid to post it.

Just bear in mind 10k is 100% more than 5K but 5K is only 50% of 10K. That's just an example of course but a good indication of how people think in the GTA.

It's amazing how some bikes are pretty close to junk at 8000, others like showroom at 50,000.

You have to see the bikes, not crappy photos on kijiji.

That's another good example.

Why would you pay anything for this? He should be paying you 10g to take it and pay off the lein

All good points.

Me thinks that 10K mileage on a TO bike would be beat the thing up from all the congestion within the city.

One more thing to add to my list of questions....where was the bike ridden all it's life ?

Last Thursday, a chap showed up to our weekly Thursday evening ride, with a tidy-looking 2003-ish GSXR (I think 600 but could be wrong, they all look the same). The bike started and ran fine and there was no hint of what I found out afterward ... the bike had 112,000 km on it and he was the original owner.

Engine never apart, only normal scheduled maintenance, chains, brakes, tires, oil changes, valve clearance checks, etc. Some bodywork parts had been replaced at one point because he had hit a deer with it.

No shock work? That's impressive!

I have a buddy with a 99 VFR800 years ago the odometer stopped working at 300,00km so considering 5-6 years later he still rides just as much it would be safe to say 500,000 km is on the bike. I know for years car oil was used in the bike and this person even was using farm machine chain, well until one broke and took out his clutch housing.
Whats the old saying ..Honda it takes a licking but keeps on ticking or was that a watch lol. Anyway 10,000 on a bike is nothing.

What? no. British despatch riders work all over London and don't even think about selling until 160-180,000.

Mileage issues are based on antique myths. In cars , the mythology is around 160,000kms. Those crap Ford airport town cars typically go to 500,000 before crushing.

Even high-revving 250s are now being seen north of 100,000, and I've got news for you all, turning back/replacing speedos is a staple of the used car industry, because few people get caught, and if they get caught, they can always blame someone else.

Some of these 600SS hooligans will ruin a bike in 10,000kms, not just the engine, but typically the frames, forks, brakes.

I was thinking the same thing. That bike is worth maybe $6k, if that. Not the $18k it would cost to buy + pay off the lien... that ad bothers me so much I'm tempted to email him to tell him so.

$14k lein ? WTF!

When I was thinking about selling my last Versys that had 70000 km on it, I looked up what kind of issues people ran into at what stages in the bike's life. First i found people with 70-100000 Miles who had no major issues, then someone with 160000 miles with no major issues. Insert usual disclaimer about never knowing how used bikes have been maintained, variance in riding styles, etc. but given that these bikes weren't introduced until 2007, you can assume that a bike with 160000 miles (not kms) over only 7 years has been ridden often and in most conditions. Ive said it before in another post, but we forget that in many places bikes are ridden year round and for many are a primary means of transportation; not a hobby. I know a lot of HD "riders" who's average ride is backing out of the garage, washing it, then riding it back in. Everything I've read has pointed to modern bikes having way longer life expectancies than people up here expect, and I, for one, would rather buy a well maintained bike with 30000+ on it than a 6 year old bike with 3000 that probably has factory oil still sitting in it!

I hope they don't start building bikes down to our expectations.
