Yeah I hope to buy tonight/tmrw.

Curious. . .had a few guys come to buy used cars over the years, pretty much all brought plates, slap em on and drive away.

Do you guys all do that when buying a used bike? I know, trailer's an option. . .but if you don't have one?

plate's for same colour, diff make/model/type, though.

If you get stopped and get the slap on the wrist ticket, the insurance companies will punish you forever.

I just don't think it's worth it, IMHO.

You can be screwed if stopped. Saying that, I have just popped a plate on and taken the odd bike or car home. As I've gotten a little older but, not much wiser, I've realized my job depends on the my licence and I've got three kids to feed.

So, I keep it legit now. It's so easy to contact your insurance company or broker with the vin and get a liability slip and have them fax or email it to you. Then you just have to run down to Service Ontario and transfer the ownership. Use the plate off your old bike if your not going to ride it and save a couple of buck from issuing a new one. Some Service Ontario locations are open Saturdays too.

Safety, ownership, insurance, pay the tax and fees, you are on your way.

if the dude still has it insured, toss him a 20 and ask him to ride it to your house, then remove plates....

Not worth the risk IMO, in the past though I may have been less risk adverse (or is that stupid)...

If the seller will do it (and it is currently plated and insured by them) have them ride it to your place and pull the plates there (offer them a ride back home...).

Rent a van or pickup. This costs well less than $100.

Get a temp plate/permit.

All are better options, just takes a little more arranging...

Of course depends on availability & time. Do the deal, call the insurance agent, MTO & temp 10-day plates and you are good to go. I've dropped the bike off a couple times and gotten a ride home or to the train (live nearby a stop).

Never do the "slap the plates on" route. As outlined, if caught it's a whole lotta pain for a number of years. One of the key questions when insuring a motor-vehicle, "... have you ever been convicted of an insurance related matter ...".

agreed with all above.
Get the owner to drop it off, if possible.
Otherwise, come back another day and ride it home yourself.

If you wanna make a deal right away, show up with a truck ready to take it home.

I don't think people appreciate

a) how cheap it is to arrange for transport,
and
b) how stupid it is to risk your ability to get insurance

U-haul will rent you a truck AND trailer for about $50, with gas and km's maybe $100 total to transport the bike safely and legally. Factor this cost into the purchase, and if you cant afford it, you cant afford that bike. simple.

on the other hand, drive with an old plate and get caught. now you get to watch your new toy get impounded, and say goodbye for the next 3 years at least, not to mention the (is it 5 grand?) fine that comes with it.

I wish there was a sticky info-graphic with the cost breakdown of getting a trailer vs the cost of getting caught. risk/reward people.

I did it last year and got caught. I have a completely clean record (at that time), and a 37 yr old man, and was just being an idiot and thinking "it will just be a quick run home". It ended up costing me $125 for "using unattached plate", and $6200 for no insurance. It was $5000 for no insurance and $1200 for victim surcharge. Let me tell you it is NOT WORTH IT!!!!

Then just make a 2 minute phone call to your broker, get insurance, and risk the $125 with no further repercussions if you deem it worth it. Get a temp permit a bit later if you don't want to risk the $125.

This is a no brainer.

Totally.

It it was going to be a last option. Bought it last night, managed to call in favour at last minute. Was curious how many do this quietly. Responses were what I hypothesized lol.

Thanks to to everyone for sharing.

Plates aside, was the ownership transferred before the vehicles left your possession?

If your name is on the ownership you are still liable for crashes etc.

You just put on old plates and go "full retard".
